Newcastle United vs RB Leipzig: The Christopher Nkunku Transfer Saga

Newcastle United are still in the hunt for Christopher Nkunku – but the chase is no longer on their terms.

The AC Milan forward is certain to leave San Siro before the transfer deadline after being left without a squad number, and the market has narrowed to two serious contenders: Newcastle and RB Leipzig. Both clubs have stepped forward. Only one currently has the player’s heart.

Player wants Leipzig, Milan waits on Newcastle

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Friday that Newcastle and Leipzig had both made direct contact with Milan to explore a deal. At that stage, a romantic return to Leipzig, where Nkunku became a star, looked like the obvious conclusion.

Since then, the picture has twisted.

According to TuttoMercato journalist Daniel Najjar, Nkunku has already reached an agreement with Leipzig and told Milan that going back to his former club is his clear preference. Leipzig, in his mind, is home.

Milan see it differently.

The Serie A club still hold the contract and the power. Najjar reports that Milan are deliberately stalling, convinced Newcastle can put a richer proposal on the table than the Germans.

“Milan continues to wait for Newcastle, the Rossoneri believing they can present a better offer in terms of the loan fee and the terms,” Najjar said. “The player currently absolutely wants to go to Leipzig.”

That line underlines the tension. Nkunku is pushing one way. Milan are looking at the numbers.

Money on the table

On Friday, the situation looked almost settled. A move back to Leipzig felt like the only realistic outcome.

Then came a flurry of contrasting reports.

Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo stated that Newcastle had already submitted the strongest financial offer to Milan. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, though, reported that Leipzig still held the edge thanks to their appeal to Nkunku and his history in the Bundesliga.

The result is a stand-off driven by money and preference. Milan are in no rush to simply grant the Frenchman his ideal move if it means leaving cash on the table. They remain open – more than open – to sending him to Tyneside, as long as Newcastle match their valuation.

TuttoMercato’s Nicholas Righi reports that Milan and Leipzig are working on a loan with an option to buy, with the total package potentially rising to around €33–35 million (£28.5–30 million). Newcastle, by contrast, are said to be ready to go straight in with a permanent transfer worth roughly €35 million (£30 million).

For Milan, the calculation is obvious. For Nkunku, it is emotional.

Leipzig’s pull vs Newcastle’s push

Nkunku’s preference for Leipzig hardly needs explaining. Between 2019 and 2023 he produced 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 appearances for the club, collecting individual honours in the Bundesliga and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players.

He knows the league. He knows the club. He thrived there.

Newcastle, though, offer Milan something Leipzig so far have not: the prospect of a clean, immediate sale at a higher guaranteed figure. That is why the Rossoneri are waiting. They want to see just how far the Premier League side are willing to stretch before they sign off on a return to Germany.

So the race for Nkunku has become a tug-of-war between sentiment and finance. Leipzig have the player’s “yes.” Newcastle may yet have the strongest bid.

The question now is simple, and it sits in Newcastle’s boardroom: do they push harder for a player who clearly sees his future back in Germany, or walk away and chase someone who actually wants St James’ Park as their next stage?
