Newcastle United Urgently Pursues Joaquin Seys for Full-Back Role

Newcastle United’s search for full-backs has moved from important to urgent.

With the new Premier League season closing in, Matthias Jaissle is staring at a depth chart that looks alarmingly thin on both flanks. Senior options are short, injuries have bitten, and the recruitment team knows exactly where the squad needs surgery before the window shuts.

Newcastle join crowded race for Seys

Into that context drops the name Joaquin Seys.

The Club Brugge left-back has been linked with Newcastle, with The Sun reporting that the Magpies are among a cluster of clubs tracking the 21-year-old Belgium international. It is a long list: Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Benfica and Porto are all said to be monitoring him.

“And Seys is also capturing attention from the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle, as well as Portuguese giants Benfica and Porto,” The Sun reported, underlining how quickly his reputation has grown.

Seys has just put together a breakout campaign in Belgium. He established himself as a regular for Club Brugge last season, making 25 league appearances and adding nine more in the Champions League. That combination of domestic consistency and European exposure has pushed him firmly into the spotlight.

The reward was international recognition. His form earned him a place in Belgium’s World Cup squad this summer, and he featured in the quarterfinal defeat to eventual champions Spain. For a 21-year-old full-back, that is a serious rise in a short space of time.

Rivals move first

There is a catch for Newcastle.

At this stage, their interest appears to lag behind some of their Premier League rivals. According to The Sun, Manchester United, Arsenal and Aston Villa have already taken formal steps, submitting enquiries about Seys’ availability after what is described as extensive scouting.

“SunSport understands that Man Utd, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all submitted enquiries as to Seys’ availability following extensive scouting,” the outlet reported. No such move from Newcastle is mentioned.

So while the Magpies are in the conversation, others are already at the front of the queue.

A costly talent under contract

Any deal would be expensive.

Club Brugge hold Seys on a contract that runs for another three years and, as reported, are under no pressure to sell. They know exactly what they have on their hands and are prepared to stand firm.

“Club Brugge are not in a hurry to sell, with three years remaining on Seys' contract. And the Belgian side are set to demand €35million (£30m) for their rising star,” The Sun reported.

For Newcastle, that figure would represent a substantial outlay on yet another young prospect at a time when every major signing has to be weighed against Financial Fair Play and the wider squad balance.

Newcastle’s full-back dilemma

On paper, Seys would give Jaissle a badly needed option at left-back.

Newcastle insist Lewis Hall is not for sale despite Manchester United’s interest, which at least secures one piece of the puzzle. But Tino Livramento’s injury, suffered on the verge of the World Cup, has stripped away another senior full-back and left the manager short of experienced, healthy options on either side.

That reality ramps up the pressure to act quickly. The club needs bodies. It also needs the right profile.

At €35 million (£30 million), Seys fits the “rising star” model Newcastle have leaned into under their current ownership: young, athletic, resale value intact. The question now is whether that should remain the priority when the squad is crying out for reliability and know-how in a key defensive area.
