Newcastle United Eye Geny Catamo as January Transfer Target

Newcastle United are already looking beyond a quiet, youth-focused summer and into a far more aggressive January, with Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo emerging as one of the names moving up their list.

The 25-year-old Mozambique international has caught the eye with a sharp start to the season in Portugal, and Newcastle’s recruitment team have stepped up their scouting of him in recent weeks, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey.

Premier League queue forming

Newcastle are far from alone. Bailey reports that Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all checked on Catamo, while Aston Villa are also continuing to monitor his situation.

Catamo has given them all plenty to watch. Two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances this season have underlined his threat from wide areas and strengthened his case as a winger ready for a bigger stage.

Newcastle have been tracking the situation for some time. Several clubs made contact with Catamo’s camp in the summer, Bailey says, and have kept him under close observation since. The interest is real. The problem is Sporting.

Sporting dig in over €60m clause

Sunderland felt that resistance first-hand.

The Black Cats made Catamo a leading target in the summer window but never got close to a deal. Sporting refused to entertain negotiations and pointed suitors straight to the winger’s €60 million (£51 million) release clause, insisting it would have to be paid in full. Sunderland walked away.

They have not gone away entirely, though. Sunderland remain interested, but now face the prospect of competing with Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa if Sporting show any sign of softening their stance.

So far, there is no indication that they will.

Catamo keen on England – but at what price?

One thing does tilt the situation towards the Premier League: Catamo’s own ambition.

“We understand Catamo is more than open to the possibility of moving to the Premier League, with the winger attracted by the prospect of testing himself in England,” Bailey reported.

That mindset will encourage Newcastle and the rest, but there are still no signs of a formal bid from St James’ Park or any active negotiations with Sporting. The January window is edging closer, yet the key question remains unanswered.
