Newcastle Pursues Archie Gray Amid Midfield Rebuild

Newcastle United’s overhaul in the middle of the pitch is showing no sign of slowing, even with Manchester City’s Nico Gonzalez closing in on a move to Tyneside.

Matthias Jaissle has already seen Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali depart this summer. Joe Willock could follow, with Besiktas circling. That kind of churn forces a club into action, and Newcastle have spent the window scouring the market for solutions.

Lucas Bergvall at Tottenham has been one name on the list. Now another Spurs midfielder has moved back into focus.

Newcastle revive interest in Archie Gray

According to the Daily Mail, via DeadlineDaylive, Newcastle have renewed their interest in Archie Gray, the 20-year-old Tottenham player whose versatility has turned heads inside St James’ Park.

Gray cost Spurs £40 million when he arrived from Leeds United and has already racked up 81 appearances. He has been used in central midfield, at centre-back and at right-back, but his natural home remains in the middle of the park. That kind of flexibility is exactly what appeals to Newcastle as they try to rebuild both depth and quality.

The problem is the price.

Gray’s market value is put at around €35 million, yet the report states Tottenham rate him at more than £60 million (€69 million). On top of that, he is considered part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans rather than a fringe asset to be cashed in on.

Spurs’ spending shapes the equation

Tottenham have already pushed their spending past €267 million this summer. At some point, sales will have to follow. The suggestion, though, is clear: Gray is not on the list of players Spurs would prefer to move on.

His status at the club only grew in pre-season. Gray captained Tottenham during the summer and then wore the armband again in their Premier League opener against Brentford. That trust has not yet translated into a permanent berth in his favoured midfield role, but it underlines how highly he is regarded in north London.

For Newcastle, that creates a delicate balance. They admire the player. They like his profile. But they know any deal would demand a huge outlay.

No rush from Newcastle

With Gonzalez now seemingly the primary immediate target for Newcastle’s midfield, there is no sense of panic over Gray. The club are not under pressure to throw £60 million-plus at Tottenham simply to make a statement or to plug a gap.

The question is whether, once the Gonzalez deal is done, Newcastle decide to push hard for another big-money midfielder, or turn their attention to strengthening elsewhere in the squad.

If Spurs keep holding firm on that valuation and on Gray’s importance to De Zerbi, Newcastle may have to decide how much they really want a player who can do a bit of everything — and whether that kind of versatility is worth paying a premium for in the final days before the 1 September deadline.
