Newcastle Targets Botafogo's Alvaro Montoro for Youth Recruitment

Newcastle’s youth-first recruitment drive has pushed deep into South America, and a new name has emerged near the top of their long-term wishlist: Botafogo midfielder Alvaro Montoro.

The 19-year-old Argentine is the latest highly rated teenager to be linked with the Magpies, who have spent much of the summer stacking Matthias Jaissle’s squad with players aged 21 or under. The pattern is clear. Newcastle are not just shopping for the present; they are aggressively stockpiling for the future.

Montoro on Europe’s radar

The interest in Montoro is not a niche scouting find. According to Globo Esporte journalist Letícia Marques, Newcastle are one of seven clubs tracking the Botafogo talent. The list reads like a who’s who of smart recruiters: AC Milan, Ajax, Sporting CP, Real Betis, Wolverhampton Wanderers and MLS side Atlanta United are all in the frame.

“The list of clubs interested in Montoro is long: Atlanta United, Betis, Milan, Newcastle, Ajax, Sporting, and Wolverhampton,” Marques reported. She added that there were indications of an offer “in the region of 20 million euros,” but talks stalled when Botafogo made their stance clear: no sale, not now.

Most European clubs, according to Marques, have placed Montoro’s value around €20 million (£17.3 million). Botafogo disagree. They have already turned down a proposal at that level from another South American side, a refusal that underlines just how highly they rate him and how strong their position has become.

Botafogo’s financial U-turn

At the start of the year, Montoro’s situation looked very different. Marques reported that Botafogo initially planned to cash in on both Montoro and Danilo in the first half of the year to ease financial pressure. Then came a turning point: the arrival of GDA as a new investor.

Fresh money changed everything. With GDA on board, Botafogo no longer needed to sell key assets to stay afloat. The club pivoted from survival mode to consolidation, deciding to keep hold of Montoro and Danilo at least until the end of the Brazilian season.

That shift has given Botafogo real leverage. They have already moved to protect their asset, tying Montoro down to a new contract that runs through December 2030. Any club hoping to prise him away now faces a long deal, a firm stance, and a rising price.

Player wants Europe, but timing is key

Botafogo’s refusal to negotiate this window does not close the door on Newcastle or any of Montoro’s other suitors. Far from it.

Marques reports that the midfielder is keen to test himself in Europe. His camp has been informed that the club may be ready to revisit a transfer once the Brazilian domestic season ends. For now, he accepts the decision to stay put.

“The player is interested in playing in Europe, but understands the club’s decision not to negotiate his transfer at this time,” Marques noted.

Montoro only joined Botafogo from Vélez Sarsfield last year, but he has wasted no time making an impact. Across 59 appearances, he has produced six goals and seven assists, numbers that help explain why so many clubs have converged on the same target before his 20th birthday.

A test of Newcastle’s conviction

For Newcastle, this is exactly the kind of market they have been trying to dominate: identifying elite potential early, before players hit the price stratosphere. The complication is obvious. By the time Botafogo are ready to talk, €20 million may just be the starting point, not the finish line.

If Montoro keeps progressing in Brazil and the queue of admirers stays as long as it looks now, the next round of negotiations could turn into a bidding war. Newcastle have planted their flag early. The question is whether they are prepared to keep pushing once the numbers climb well beyond that initial €20 million mark.
