New Zealand Withdraws Support for Infantino and Demands FIFA Audit

Gianni Infantino’s support is no longer just eroding in Europe. It is now cracking at the far edge of the football map.

New Zealand Football (NZF) has formally withdrawn its backing for the Swiss official’s candidacy ahead of the 2027 FIFA Congress, a sharp public rebuke from a federation that has often preferred to work quietly in the background.

This is not a simple protest vote. NZF has gone a step further, demanding an independent review of the FIFA Forward Enterprise program, the governing body’s flagship development and funding scheme. An external audit of that scale would strike at the heart of how FIFA manages its money and its promise to grow the game worldwide.

After conducting its own internal analysis, the New Zealand federation says FIFA’s recent decisions have eroded trust and deepened divisions across international football. In Wellington’s view, only an investigation led from outside Zurich can begin to restore credibility to the way the organisation is run.

That stance turns a regional grievance into a global challenge.

NZF argues that the current turmoil offers member associations a rare opening to insist on tougher governance standards, real transparency, and clear accountability from the world body. By breaking ranks so publicly, New Zealand has opened a new front that stretches well beyond the resistance already seen on the European continent.

The move follows the lead of Ireland and several other European federations, who have already slammed the door on Infantino’s leadership. What began as a European revolt is starting to look like something much larger, a critical current that now threatens the president’s internal support as the next elections draw closer.

The question now is how many more associations will decide this is the moment to push back.
