Nestory Irankunda Joins Sporting CP for UEFA Champions League

Nestory Irankunda is heading to the UEFA Champions League – and Portugal – with his move from Watford to Sporting CP confirmed on Saturday, capping a whirlwind rise for the 20-year-old Socceroo.

The winger’s transfer is reportedly worth an initial €15 million, with performance-related add-ons pushing the deal to just over €18 million. Bayern Munich, who first brought him to Europe, are set to collect 40% of that figure thanks to a sell-on clause agreed when he left Bavaria for Watford in 2025.

The money won’t stop there for his former clubs. Adelaide United and Adelaide Croatia, where Irankunda honed his game before crossing continents, are also in line for a significant payday through a combination of sell-on fees from his Bayern move and FIFA training compensation.

It’s the latest chapter in a year that has changed Irankunda’s life. He arrived in England on a permanent deal from Bayern and hit nine goals in the Championship for Watford in his first full season. Then came June in North America, when he became the youngest Australian to score at a men’s World Cup, striking in the Socceroos’ 2-0 win over Türkiye.

Now comes Sporting. Now comes the Champions League.

In Lisbon, Irankunda will walk into a forward line stacked with contrasting threats: Greek striker Fotis Ioannidis, Colombian attacker Luis Suárez, Mozambican winger Geny Catamo and Portugal international Pedro Gonçalves. Catamo started the new league campaign on the wing but may not be around for long, with strong interest reported from Sunderland, Brentford, Aston Villa and Everton.

Sporting know exactly what to do with a gifted young attacker. This is the club where Cristiano Ronaldo made his professional debut in 2002, and where turning potential into profit has become part of the identity. Recent years have seen Geovany Quenda move to Chelsea and Viktor Gyökeres to Arsenal, while Bruno Fernandes was sold to Manchester United and Manuel Ugarte to Paris Saint-Germain.

They remain contenders at home and increasingly dangerous in Europe. After finishing second in the Primeira Liga in 2025-26, Rui Borges’ side will enter this season’s Champions League in the new league phase, aiming to at least match last season’s run to the quarterfinals, where they fell to eventual finalists Arsenal.

Their domestic campaign began on Saturday with a 2-2 draw against Estrela da Amadora, Catamo and Gonçalves starting on the flanks as Sporting dropped early points but showed familiar attacking intent.

For Irankunda, the immediate focus is settling into a new country, a new league and a club that expects to compete on all fronts. The spotlight will only intensify when the Champions League anthem plays in Lisbon.

He may not have long to wait for his next taste of international football either. The Socceroos are set to host Brazil in a pair of friendlies next month in Townsville and Brisbane, a stage perfectly suited to a young winger now carrying the badge of Sporting and the weight of rising expectation.
