Napoli Signs Benoit Badiashile on Loan from Chelsea

Napoli have moved decisively to strengthen their defence, striking a deal with Chelsea to bring Benoit Badiashile to Serie A on an initial loan with an option to buy.

The club announced the signing on Saturday through their official channels, confirming that the 25-year-old Frenchman arrives on a temporary basis but with a clear path to a permanent stay in Naples.

“Napoli announced that it has acquired the sporting rights to the player Benoit Badiashile from Chelsea on a temporary basis with a permanent option,” read the statement on the club’s website, drawing a firm line under his stop-start spell in London.

A fresh start after a stuttering Chelsea spell

Badiashile leaves Stamford Bridge after a turbulent season in which he struggled to nail down a regular starting spot amid constant managerial upheaval. He made 16 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea last term, never quite managing to establish himself as the defensive cornerstone many expected when he arrived.

Chelsea signed the centre-back from Monaco in January 2023 for around €37 million, betting on his blend of size, timing and left-footed balance. Before his move to England, he had already logged 135 competitive games for Monaco, emerging as one of Ligue 1’s most coveted young defenders.

His time in the Premier League has been shorter than anticipated, but not without flashes of why he commanded such a fee. Now Napoli are gambling that, in a more stable environment, those flashes can become the norm.

The numbers behind the deal

The structure of the agreement gives both clubs room to manoeuvre. According to Sky Sport transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli will pay a €3 million loan fee for the season, with an option to make the transfer permanent next summer for an additional €20 million.

Italian reports earlier in the week suggested slightly different figures, with some outlets claiming the buy option could reach €27 million once add-ons and bonuses are included. What is clear is that Chelsea have positioned themselves to recoup a significant portion of their original investment if Napoli trigger the option.

For Chelsea, Badiashile’s exit is part of another sweeping summer clear-out. He follows Marc Cucurella to the exit door after the full-back’s move to Real Madrid, joins Andrey Santos in leaving for Manchester United, and departs in the same window as Trevoh Chalobah, who has signed for Como.

Napoli’s defensive rebuild gathers pace

For Napoli, this is a statement move. Badiashile becomes their second major first-team signing of the summer, arriving hot on the heels of Costantino Favasuli from US Catanzaro earlier in the week.

The French international adds height, physicality and top-level experience to a backline that needed reinforcing. He also brings a profile Napoli have often targeted successfully in recent years: young, tested in European competition, but still with room to grow and resale value to protect the investment.

True to form, president Aurelio De Laurentiis was first to go public. Before the club’s formal announcement dropped, he posted a simple “Benvenuto Benoit” on X, setting social media alight and confirming what had been building for days.

The timing is no coincidence. Napoli open their new Serie A campaign away to Genoa later today, and the club wanted the deal sealed before a ball was kicked. A new season, a new defensive pillar, and a clear signal of intent from a club determined to stay in the fight at the top of Italian football.
