Mikel Arteta Signs New Long-Term Contract with Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has committed his long-term future to Arsenal, agreeing an improved new contract with the Premier League champions.

The Spaniard’s existing deal was due to run out at the end of this season, a ticking clock that had hovered in the background while his side chased and then claimed the title. Negotiations have been running for months, and earlier in September BBC Sport revealed that an agreement was close.

Now it is understood that the final details have been settled and Arteta has reached a full agreement with the club to extend his stay in north London.

The exact length of the new contract has not been confirmed, but the terms are expected to carry him into at least his 10th year at Arsenal, having first taken charge in December 2019. From a rookie head coach walking into a fractured dressing room to the man who delivered the Premier League, he is now being tied to the next phase of the project he started.

The new deal reflects that status. Arteta is set for a sharp pay rise on his current package of £10m per year plus a further £5m in bonuses, a salary that already placed him among the league’s top earners. Arsenal’s hierarchy have chosen to double down on the architect of their resurgence.

Arteta himself moved to calm any nerves over his future last week, when asked about the talks.

“They [the fans] don't have to worry about any of that because I want to be here. I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with,” he said.

The contract now matches that sentiment. Arsenal have their title-winning manager locked in. The next chapter of the Arteta era is officially on the way.
