Mikel Arteta Confirms Commitment to Arsenal Amid Contract Talks

Mikel Arteta has moved to shut down any nerves over his Arsenal future, insisting he is exactly where he wants to be as he enters the final year of his contract.

The Spaniard, who ended the club’s 22-year wait for a Premier League title in May, was widely expected to be swiftly rewarded with fresh terms. The extension has not arrived yet. The questions have.

Arteta is not entertaining the drama.

“They don’t have to worry about any of that, because I want to be here,” he said, calm and unequivocal.

“I am extremely happy. I feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with, and when we have the possibility, we will resolve that. And that’s it.”

No countdown clock. No public posturing. Just a manager who believes the deal will come when the club and coach finally sit down and sign it off.

Contract talk parked, squad building front and centre

Arsenal open their 2026-27 campaign against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, a fixture that usually doubles as a mood check for the champions. The uncertainty over Arteta’s contract might have cast a shadow over the build-up. He has made sure it doesn’t.

“There is always another priority, I think!” he said with a nod to a hectic summer. “That’s the way we have been treating it, I think because everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue.

“I think because my will, certainly, is to be here and I am very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same one. That is why everyone is doing things in a really organic way.”

The “other priority” has been clear: strengthening a title-winning squad without losing its identity.

Arsenal have moved decisively in key areas. Bruno Guimaraes has arrived from Newcastle to deepen and sharpen the midfield. Christos Tzolis has come in from Club Brugge to add another attacking option. Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen has been turned into a permanent deal, while Illan Meslier has joined on a free to bolster the goalkeeping department.

That is not the profile of a club standing still.

Arteta did not get everything he wanted. Moves for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior went nowhere in a market where Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea have each dropped £100 million on a single player. Arsenal have chosen a different route.

Champions, but still chasing an edge

The spending of their rivals has not spooked Arteta. If anything, it has hardened his belief that Arsenal must lean into what makes them different.

“I am really happy with the squad, the players that I have and I am really happy with the ambition of the club,” he said, with links continuing to swirl around defensive targets such as Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah.

“There is zero question about that and we have shown that in the manner we have tried to act, but I think we need to do it our own way.

“We have super strengths and we have other areas we need to be very conscious because we don’t have the elements or the structure that other clubs have.

“We need to do it our way. We are always on it that way and we will do what we believe is the right thing to do. To have the best possibility to compete in every competition, that’s for sure.”

The message is consistent: Arsenal will not try to out-City City or out-spend Chelsea. They will back their model, their recruitment, their manager.

And that manager, despite the ticking clock on his contract, sounds in no mood to walk away from what he has built. The next signatures everyone will judge him on may not be his own, but the ones that define whether this title was a one-off – or the start of something that demands a long-term stay.
