Mike Solan Set to Lead Offaly Footballers

Mike Solan is poised to take charge of the Offaly footballers, with the county’s management committee putting his name forward as the next senior boss.

The former Longford manager, who left that role earlier this month, will be presented for ratification at September’s county board meeting. If the clubs give it the green light, Solan will step into a three-year term at the helm of the Faithful County.

He won’t be coming in alone. His backroom team is set to feature respected coach Joe Keane — who has previously worked with Mayo, Sligo and Longford — and Offaly great Nigel Dunne, a figure already central to the county’s recent underage revival. Dunne guided the Offaly minors to a long-awaited Leinster title in 2025, ending a 35-year drought at that level.

Solan’s coaching journey has taken him through several dressing rooms and provinces. Before Longford, he managed the Mayo Under-21s and later linked up with Andy Moran’s management team in Leitrim, adding to a résumé steeped in inter-county experience.

He now looks set to inherit an Offaly side coming out of a period of joint leadership. Previous co-managers Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly stepped down last month. Harte had weighed up staying on for another season after joining Kelly on the line in 2024 — Kelly had been in place from the year before — but both ultimately opted to walk away.

If ratified, Solan’s task will be clear: take that underage spark, harness the experience around him, and turn Offaly into a force that can trouble the established order once again.
