Mike Maignan's Uncertain Future with Milan Amid Saudi Interest

Mike Maignan and Milan are no longer moving in step. The bond that once felt unshakeable now looks fragile, frayed by a chaotic end to last season and a brutal reset behind the scenes.

The France international remains one of the pillars of the Rossoneri project, a goalkeeper of rare authority and presence. Yet the mood around him has shifted. The club’s sweeping overhaul in May – the dismissal of head coach Max Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare and long-serving goalkeeping coach Claudio Filippi – cut deep.

Maignan had forged a tight professional relationship with that trio, especially Filippi. Inside Milanello, many credited the veteran coach with sharpening Maignan into one of Europe’s elite shot-stoppers, a keeper whose performances underpinned Milan’s recent resurgence. Losing that technical core has left scars, and Maignan’s frustration has been growing ever since.

Saudi interest changes the temperature of any negotiation.

Al-Nassr, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, have sensed an opening and moved into position. The Riyadh club, already home to Cristiano Ronaldo, are searching for a new No. 1 to succeed Bento and see Maignan as a marquee solution. With the Saudi Pro League flexing serious financial muscle, Milan know they could be dragged into a fight they are not built to win on pure salary and bonuses, especially with Maignan already among their top earners.

This is not idle noise. Reports indicate Al-Nassr’s interest is concrete, with the club closely tracking every development as Maignan weighs his options. The contrast with last summer is stark. Back then, he turned down a substantial offer from Chelsea, reassured by Allegri’s presence and a stable hierarchy he trusted. That safety net has gone.

The tension has spilled into pre-season.

Maignan and teammate Adrien Rabiot have both postponed their return to Milanello, pushing their arrival back from August 12 to August 16. Officially, Milan have presented it as a longer break after their World Cup exertions. On paper, it is a reasonable explanation. In reality, the optics are awkward for a club trying to project calm and control.

Around the club, the delay is widely read as a signal. A hint of dissatisfaction. Both players were close to the outgoing staff, and their late return only fuels the sense that the dressing room has not fully processed the upheaval.

Milan’s hierarchy now walk a tightrope.

They are desperate to keep a world-class asset who also happens to be one of the leaders of the squad. At the same time, they understand the dangers of forcing an unhappy captain to stay. Football history is littered with examples of stars held against their will, only for performances to dip and dressing rooms to sour.

With the new season looming, the pressure on the board is intense. They must sit down with Maignan and sell him a future he believes in – a clear technical plan, a coaching setup he can trust, and a squad built to compete at the highest level. Without that, the door to Saudi Arabia, or elsewhere, swings wider by the week.

On paper, Milan are protected.

Maignan signed a major contract extension earlier this year, committing himself to the club until June 2031. His new deal, worth around €7 million per season including bonuses, puts him alongside Rafael Leao at the top of the wage structure and was designed to lock down the position for the next decade.

That security, though, has not soothed the fanbase. Since arriving in 2021 as the man tasked with replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma, Maignan has become a symbol as much as a goalkeeper – a leader in the dressing room, a commanding presence on the pitch, and a key figure in Milan’s recent successes. The idea of losing him, and losing him to a project outside Europe’s traditional elite, hits hard.

Milan hold the contract. Maignan holds the mood. Al-Nassr are waiting.

Something will have to give before the first whistle of the new season.
