Mike Dean's Controversial Refereeing Antics

Mike Dean has sparked a furious backlash after admitting he used to “play games” and joke his way through Premier League matches while in charge of the whistle.

The former top-flight referee, who took charge of 553 Premier League fixtures across more than 20 years, lifted the lid on his antics during an appearance on the Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party podcast.

‘See how long we can go without blowing the whistle’

Dean, now 58 and retired from on-field duties since 2022 after a brief spell as a VAR assistant, told Vardy he would sometimes set himself challenges during games to keep himself entertained.

“There used to be games that we used to have, as a laugh,” Dean said. “We used to say something like, ‘We’ll kick off now, right? See how long we can go without blowing the whistle.’”

He claimed he tried it “a few times” in the Premier League before VAR was introduced.

“Went 20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times. Let it go, let it go, let it go,” he added.

Dean also admitted to another personal stunt: barely moving from the centre circle to see how long he could stay there during live top-flight matches.

“I used to do another thing in the Premier League. I used to stand in the centre circle and see how long I could stay in the centre circle before I had to leave. That was just me joking about,” he said.

“But the lads used to be on the line saying, ‘You can’t’. I said, ‘I’ll try it’. I just used to kind of run around, kind of go, but don’t go out of it. Got about 15 minutes once in one game, without leaving the centre circle.”

Bemusement inside refereeing circles

Those still involved in officiating have reacted with disbelief. Dean’s stories, while eye-catching, are understood to have been met with bemusement by figures currently working within the game, with some pointing to a lack of concrete detail to back up his claims.

Refereeing in England now falls under the umbrella of the recently rebranded Pro Ref, formerly Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The body has been approached for comment on Dean’s remarks.

‘Are you a child?’ – Agbonlahor tears into Dean

If some within refereeing circles rolled their eyes, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor was far less restrained.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor tore into Dean’s attempts at humour.

“He’s trying to be funny but it’s not funny. You’re not funny, Mike Dean, that sums you up,” he said.

“He’s throwing himself under the bus. This is the Premier League. Are you a child?

“It doesn’t sit right with me at all. I was thinking, ‘Mike Dean managed a lot of games I played in.’ One word to describe him, I’d say, is a prat.”

At a time when trust in officiating is already under intense scrutiny, Dean’s nostalgic anecdotes have done more than raise a smile. They have reopened an uncomfortable question: what exactly was going through the referee’s mind while the stakes were at their highest?
