Meslier’s Arsenal Gamble Criticized by Stack

The plan was simple enough. Arsenal wanted a calm, seasoned pair of hands behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Illan Meslier arrived in north London to be exactly that.

For Graham Stack, it’s a move that makes no sense.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper believes the 26-year-old has taken a wrong turn by accepting a third-choice role at the Premier League champions, arguing it hints at a drop in competitive edge from a player who once carried Leeds United.

Meslier walked away from Elland Road this summer after six years, 215 appearances and a contract run down. He joined the Gunners as a free agent. To Stack, that decision says as much about mentality as it does about opportunity.

“I question him, I really do question the goalkeeper,” Stack told Metro, clearly baffled by the Frenchman’s choice. “The reason I say that is that he’s got Premier League experience, he’s played countless games in the Premier League, he’s got bundles of experience, been at Leeds for I don’t know how many years.

“He’s played loads of games, and maybe he doesn’t have that burning desire to go and play games and put himself under pressure. Maybe that’s what he’s after.

“But I’m just surprised with someone of Meslier’s quality that he’s decided to almost chuck the towel in and be a number three.”

For a keeper who has already lived promotion, survival scraps and the brutal reality of being frozen out by Daniel Farke, it is a harsh verdict. Yet Stack is unflinching. In his eyes, Meslier has swapped the heat of the Premier League spotlight for a comfort zone on the champions’ bench.

Arsenal’s Academy in the Firing Line

Stack’s criticism does not stop at Meslier. His concerns run deeper, right into Arsenal’s goalkeeping production line.

Meslier’s arrival has pushed 20-year-old Tommy Setford towards the exit door on loan, a move expected to secure the youngster regular minutes elsewhere. To Stack, that underlines a bigger problem.

“Look, he’s experienced, but it’s highly unlikely that you would use him,” he said of Meslier’s role. “My question is, is there not another goalkeeper at Arsenal Football Club that’s capable of that?

“What are they doing at the club that they’re not producing any goalies? They just keep signing goalies. At what point is there going to be an Arsenal goalkeeper that’s going to, not even break through, but I’m talking about being a number three.”

The frustration is clear. A club famed for its academy talent is, in Stack’s view, blocking its own pathway in the one position where continuity and trust are everything.

Meslier Embraces the Champions’ Stage

Meslier, for his part, sees the move very differently. Far from throwing in the towel, he insists this is the peak of his English journey.

He has already pulled on the shirt in a pre-season friendly against Girona, quickly folding into Mikel Arteta’s squad as they prepare to defend their title. After a turbulent final year in Yorkshire, he is desperate for a reset.

“I’m extremely happy. It's a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England. I'm very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I've got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again,” he told the club’s official website.

For Meslier, this is about medals, prestige, and testing himself inside an elite environment, even if the route to the starting XI is blocked by two established names. For Stack, it still feels like ambition diluted.

Two very different readings of the same decision. The season will judge which one holds up.

Title Defence Backed Despite Keeper Debate

While the goalkeeping situation has stirred debate, Stack’s overall view of Arsenal’s prospects could hardly be more bullish.

The champions have moved aggressively in the market, landing Bruno Guimaraes as a headline signing and strengthening further with Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis. Those additions, layered onto a title-winning core, have convinced Stack that Arteta’s side remain the benchmark.

“Absolutely, Arsenal will win it,” he said, without hesitation. “I think Arsenal will be buzzing after last year, and think it’s a situation now where it’s basically the monkey off their back.

“They will be going into the season absolutely buzzing, and with the signing of Guimaraes and probably more to come between now and the start of the season, I think they will definitely strengthen.

“I fancy Arsenal to go and win it, but I think that it will be a close-run race with Man City, I think City will be close behind them.”

So Arsenal enter the new campaign with a bold prediction on their side, a refreshed squad, and a goalkeeping hierarchy that has already split opinion.

If Meslier ends up deciding a key night in May, Stack’s questions will either look prophetic – or completely redundant.
