Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Season Revival: Hope for MLS Playoffs
Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s season, once written off, suddenly has a pulse again.
The Chicago Fire defender, who tore his thigh in late July and was widely expected to miss the rest of the year, could now return in time to feature in the MLS Cup Playoffs scheduled for late November.
Fire coach Gregg Berhalter rowed back on his initial prognosis after his side’s 1-1 draw away to the New York Red Bulls, admitting his earlier call on Mbokazi’s season being over had been too definitive.
“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter said. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”
For Chicago, that hint of hope is significant. Before the injury, Mbokazi had been a rock in their back line, a constant presence who anchored the defence and earned a spot in the MLS All Star game. His form had already pushed him into a different bracket of recognition.
The rise wasn’t limited to club football. At the World Cup, Mbokazi was one of Bafana’s standout performers, helping drive the national team into the knockout rounds for the first time in their history. On that stage, he looked like one of the tournament’s genuine young breakout stars, combining composure with an edge that caught the eye of observers around the world.
Then the thigh tear stopped everything. Momentum gone. Season, it seemed, gone with it.
Now the timeline has shifted. If the recovery continues on its current track, Mbokazi could be back in Berhalter’s match day plans just as the playoffs begin, a potentially huge boost for a Fire side that leaned heavily on his presence earlier in the campaign.
The news carries a sting for his country, though. Bafana face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15, fixtures that fall just days before Mbokazi is likely to be ready for competitive action again. An early return to club duty would come too late to influence those games, leaving the national team to navigate a key international window without one of its most influential defenders.
Chicago might yet get their defensive pillar back when the stakes are highest. Bafana, staring at those November dates, will have to find another way.
