Max Dowman's Future at Arsenal: Mikel Arteta's Stance

Mikel Arteta is in no rush to push the button on a Max Dowman loan. If anything, he sounds determined to keep Arsenal’s teenage prodigy exactly where he is — under his nose.

Dowman, still only 16, underlined why in midweek. Thrown into the Carabao Cup tie at Ipswich Town for his first appearance of the season, he walked away with two goals in a 4-2 win and another surge in the hype around him. This is a player who already has Champions League minutes on his record and only finished his GCSEs last season.

The timeline is clear. Dowman turns 17 on New Year’s Eve, when he will sign a professional contract that has already been agreed. That landmark, and his rising profile, has fuelled talk that Arsenal could look at a January loan to accelerate his development with regular football elsewhere.

Arteta’s stance cuts through that noise.

“We haven't really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have him in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there,” the Arsenal manager said.

The club are running a strict review process. Every six months, they will sit down and assess where Dowman is, what he needs and what Arsenal need.

“We will evaluate every six months, where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” Arteta explained. “It depends on a lot of factors — what he needs and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.

“We have to be open but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”

That last line is telling. For all the speculation, Arteta sees Dowman as an active part of his group, not a project to be parked elsewhere at the first opportunity.

The Arsenal manager knows the lure and the risk of an early move. He left Spain for Paris at 17 and referenced his own experience as he weighed up what might come next for one of Europe’s most talked-about youngsters.

“There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not,” he said. “In my particular case I was 17 when I went to Paris.

“It depends on the atmosphere that you find there and how much the coach believes in you, whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes. Which country, it depends.

“But now he is in a good place, let's keep him here.”

For now, that feels less like a throwaway remark and more like a policy line: Max Dowman’s future may be reviewed every six months, but his present is very clearly at Arsenal.
