Mason Greenwood Faces UEFA Investigation Over Fenerbahce Chaos

Mason Greenwood is facing a UEFA investigation over his involvement in the chaotic scenes that followed Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off win away to Lyon.

The Turkish club confirmed that European football’s governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against Greenwood, midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and the club itself after the ill-tempered second leg at the Groupama Stadium at the end of August, a match Fenerbahce won 2-1.

Tunnel chaos after final whistle

What should have been a night remembered for Fenerbahce’s return to the Champions League spotlight instead descended into disorder once the final whistle went. Celebrations on the pitch quickly turned sour as tempers flared between players, staff and sections of the home support.

Greenwood is being investigated for his role in a post-match confrontation, while Guendouzi is accused of provoking Lyon supporters as he left the field at full-time. The flashpoints did not stop at the touchline. The confrontation spilled into the tunnel, dragging in figures from both sides.

Television footage showed a person in what appeared to be a Lyon tracksuit emerging amid the melee and attempting a flying kick at Guendouzi. The France international had to be held back as emotions boiled over in the cramped space leading to the dressing rooms.

Out on the pitch, Greenwood also found himself in the middle of the chaos. As Fenerbahce players tried to celebrate a significant victory, several Lyon supporters attempted to force their way towards the playing surface, adding to the sense of volatility around the stadium.

Fenerbahce respond to UEFA charge

Fenerbahce later issued a formal statement confirming UEFA’s move and insisting they will defend their players robustly in the disciplinary process.

“Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA concerning our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our Club,” the statement read.

“Our Club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA committees to protect the rights and interests of both our players and Fenerbahce. All required information, documents, and defences will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We present this to the public for information.”

The club now waits to learn the scale of any punishment, with potential sanctions ranging from fines to suspensions, depending on UEFA’s findings.

Guendouzi: “That really gets to you”

Speaking after the game, Guendouzi laid bare his anger at the treatment he said he received from the stands throughout the night.

“You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children – even before the match – and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet,” he said.

“Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes – even longer if you count the warm-up – they were insulting my family.

“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful.”

Head coach Ismail Kartal publicly backed his midfielder, underlining the squad’s support after the incident.

“As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about,” he said.

Greenwood’s new stage – and a possible reunion

For Greenwood, the night was significant beyond the controversy. The forward, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille on a four-year deal in July, helped the club reach the Champions League main draw for the first time since 2009.

Fenerbahce have been placed in a demanding league phase line-up that includes AS Roma, Aston Villa, Slavia Praha, Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. It is a schedule that offers both glamour and jeopardy.

With Manchester United also back in the competition, the prospect of Greenwood facing his former club lingers in the background. That scenario would only materialise if both teams navigate the league phase and move deeper into the tournament.
