Marcus Rashford's Unexpected Return to Manchester United

Marcus Rashford’s name flashed up on the fourth official’s board and, for a moment, time rolled back at Old Trafford.

The landscape he returned to had changed. United remain open to selling him, yet Michael Carrick has publicly welcomed him back into the fold, stressing that Rashford has been in good spirits since rejoining the group. On Saturday, Carrick backed that message with minutes.

When Rashford’s new number – No.9, at least for now – appeared on the board, the reaction inside the ground cut through the noise of online debate. There were cheers, not boos. Curiosity, not hostility. It was his first outing in a United shirt for 20 months.

Outside the stadium, the picture looks harsher. In a Manchester Evening News poll earlier this summer, 69% of 7,924 voters – 5,465 people – said they wanted the club to cut ties. Only 31%, 2,459 voters, were open to the idea of Rashford being handed another chance.

Inside it, on a pre-season afternoon against AC Milan, nuance returned. Some fans still believe United should move on, that the club and player need a clean break. Others saw a homegrown forward back where it all began, trying to rewrite an ending that once felt inevitable.

For now, Rashford has a number on his back again, a manager prepared to use him, and a fanbase split down the middle.
