Marcus Rashford Returns to Manchester United for AC Milan Clash

Marcus Rashford is back in the Manchester United spotlight – and this time, he walks straight into a storyline he knows all too well.

Michael Carrick has named the winger in his travelling squad for United’s final pre-season friendly against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, this afternoon. On paper, it is just another warm-up game. In reality, it is loaded with subplots.

At the heart of it: Ruben Amorim.

A grudge match without the handshake

Amorim, now in charge at AC Milan, endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford, and his relationship with Rashford symbolised that collapse. The pair’s fallout was dramatic and public. After dropping Rashford for the Manchester derby in December 2024, Amorim went a step further and banished him from training altogether.

That decision effectively pushed Rashford out of the club. By January, he was at Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season, a temporary escape from a situation that looked beyond repair.

When he returned to United, things did not soften. Rashford was placed in a so‑called “Bomb Squad” and shipped out again, this time to Barcelona on a season-long loan. While Rashford tried to rebuild in Spain, Amorim’s own position at United crumbled. He was sacked and replaced by Carrick.

Now the roles are reversed. Amorim is the outsider, standing in the opposite dugout. Rashford is back in United colours, named in the squad to face the coach who froze him out.

Barcelona door closes, United door reopens

Rashford’s year at Barcelona was supposed to be the start of a permanent break. A £26m buy option sat in the agreement, and the expectation was that the Catalan club would trigger it.

They did not. Instead, Barcelona turned to Anthony Gordon, leaving Rashford’s future wide open again.

After the World Cup, he returned to Manchester and has been back around the first-team group. He spent this week in Dublin with United but did not feature against Leeds. Now comes the first real test of Carrick’s intentions: Rashford has been selected to travel for the Milan game.

The question is no longer whether he is back. It is how big a role he will be given.

Fans make their feelings clear

Supporters have already delivered their verdict. Asked by MEN Sport, “Should Marcus Rashford play against AC Milan on Saturday?”, United fans responded in force.

Out of 2,799 votes at the time of writing, an emphatic 84 per cent said “Yes”. Only 13 per cent felt he should not play, with three per cent unsure.

For a player whose United career looked over not long ago, that is a powerful show of backing. The fanbase, at least, wants to see Rashford on the pitch against Amorim.

Not just Rashford’s reunion

Rashford is not the only player with history under the Portuguese coach. Kobbie Mainoo, who also endured a difficult spell during Amorim’s tenure, is in the travelling squad as well. His inclusion adds another layer to a fixture that suddenly feels far more charged than a typical pre-season outing.

There is also room for fresh energy. Teenage forward JJ Gabriel has been handed another chance with the first team, a sign that Carrick is willing to blend established names with emerging talent as he shapes his squad.

Pre-season games rarely carry emotional weight. This one does. Rashford, back in United colours, stepping out in Wroclaw with Amorim on the opposite bench, has the feel of a story that is not quite finished.

Whether Carrick turns that into a starting place, a cameo, or simply a statement of reintegration could tell us plenty about where Rashford’s United career goes next.
