Marcus Rashford Rejects Fenerbahce Move, Commits to Manchester United

Marcus Rashford has turned his back on a high-profile move to Turkey and is set to stay at Manchester United for the 2026/27 season, rebuffing serious interest from Fenerbahce.

The Istanbul club, fresh from securing Champions League qualification, had lined up the 28-year-old as their marquee signing of the summer. European nights on the Bosphorus, a central role, the status of being the face of their project – it was all on the table.

Rashford wasn’t tempted.

He has made it clear he has no desire to move to the Super Lig, a stance that represents a stark shift from how he viewed his future at the start of the window. Then, the forward was open – even eager – to cut ties with his boyhood club and start again elsewhere.

That mood has changed.

The England international’s future has been under the microscope for months, especially after a productive loan spell at Barcelona last season. Earlier in the summer he was said to be desperate for a permanent move away from Old Trafford. Now, with the deadline looming next Tuesday, his focus has swung back to United: win his place, win back the crowd, and win over his head coach.

Michael Carrick has helped drive that reset. Rashford has been working his way back into the fold during pre-season, and his manager has been publicly impressed by his attitude and conditioning. The forward came off the bench in United’s recent defeat to Hull City, replacing Patrick Dorgu, a small but telling sign that the door is very much open for him.

Carrick did not hide his satisfaction with Rashford’s response since returning to training, saying: “It's been pretty obvious since Marcus came back training with Kobbie [Mainoo] and Licha [Martinez] pretty much in Dublin that he's come back fantastically well, you know.”

For Rashford, the dream scenario had been a return to Barcelona. A second spell at the Nou Camp was his preferred option, but that route closed when the Catalan club chose not to trigger the £26m release clause in his United contract. Instead, Barcelona moved on, raiding the Premier League and Bundesliga to bring in Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.

That decision left Rashford at a crossroads. With his release clause untouched and his market narrowed by a hefty £325,000-a-week wage packet, only a small group of clubs could realistically afford him. Fenerbahce pushed hardest. United, though, never felt compelled to sell.

Now, with just days left in the window, the picture is clear. United are content to keep one of their most recognisable academy graduates, and Rashford is prepared to fight for his place in a squad that finished third in the Premier League last season and wants to go higher.

The relationship between player and manager is central to this sudden U-turn. Carrick’s faith has resonated. Rashford’s work behind closed doors at Carrington has been noticed. The Hull cameo was a first step; Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday is set to be the real marker.

If selected, it will be Rashford’s first appearance at Old Trafford since December 2024 – a poignant return for a forward who has lived almost his entire professional life under that stadium’s glare. The numbers still command respect: 138 goals in 427 appearances for United, a record that underlines why he remains a powerful voice in the dressing room.

For Carrick, keeping Rashford is not just about sentiment. It gives him a seasoned international in the final third, someone who has carried the club’s attack before and may yet do so again.
