Manchester United Women Face Sheffield United in League Cup Showdown

Manchester United Women step into League Cup action against Sheffield United on Tuesday night with a season to rescue and a point to prove.

The start has been brutal. Defeat to London City, then a 0-5 hammering by Chelsea, stripped away any early optimism and left questions hanging over the squad. But a gritty, improved performance in the draw with Arsenal on Saturday has at least given United something to cling to: signs of life, signs of fight.

Into that picture walks Simi Awujo.

The Canadian midfielder scored her first league goal for the club in the loss to London City and will be pushing for more minutes in the cup tie. The game carries an extra twist for her too – it falls on her birthday. High stakes, personal and professional.

A bilingual bridge in the dressing room

Awujo has already found a different way to influence this squad. Raised in Georgia, she grew up learning Spanish and has used that skill to help teammates settle and connect.

Talking to the club’s website ahead of the match, she described her relationship with some of United’s Spanish speakers.

“Yeah, Medi’s (Andrea Medina) quite out there. I think it seemed quite easy for her to just mesh with everyone because she's just a good personality – lots of fun! But yeah, I do speak Spanish. I would say I'm proficient, I wouldn't say fully fluent just because I've never lived there or anything.”

That ability has turned into a quiet asset behind the scenes.

“The midfielder added, “but I can have conversations with Medi and Rebe (Rebeca Bernal) as well now, in Spanish.””

Her interest in the language started in school, then deepened as she picked it up from TV. Now it’s part of her daily life at United, helping to knit together a diverse dressing room at a time when unity matters.

One step further

On the pitch, the target is clear. United reached the League Cup final last season, only to be beaten by Chelsea. The hurt from that defeat still lingers, and Awujo made it clear the ambition has not dimmed.

“As professionals that's always the goal, to win as much as you can – I don't think any of that has changed,” she said. “Obviously, we're not in Champions League this year, the FA Cup hasn't started so I guess in terms of winning silverware the Players Cup is our focus as well as the league right now. Then obviously when the FA Cup comes around the same will apply for that, we're always striving to win the most games and win as much silverware as possible.”

No Champions League. No FA Cup yet. The League Cup and the league itself stand front and centre. For a side that has already taken some heavy blows this season, this competition offers both a reset and a route to tangible success.

And for Awujo, if she gets the nod, a birthday under the lights and a chance to turn a difficult start into a night she will never forget.
