Manchester United Target Alejandro Balde as Barcelona Weighs Future

Manchester United are circling Alejandro Balde as Barcelona edge closer to a decision on the young left-back’s future, with the Catalan club authorising agent Jorge Mendes to actively seek a new destination.

Balde, once seen as a long-term pillar on Barça’s left flank, was left out of the squad for Sunday night’s game against Elche at the Martinez Valero. For a player of his status, that omission was no simple rotation call. Inside the club, it is being read as a clear signal: negotiations over his departure are already in motion.

His name has been pushed across Europe’s market boards. England, Portugal and Italy are all in the conversation, but, according to Catalan outlet Sport, it is Manchester United that most excite the 22-year-old. The Premier League, Old Trafford, a fresh start. It all appeals.

The dynamic inside Barcelona has shifted. Balde spent the summer insisting he wanted to stay and fight for his place, yet the arrival and form of Joao Cancelo have altered the landscape. The competition is fierce, the minutes no longer guaranteed, and the left-back has softened his stance on leaving.

United, though, are not treating Balde as their only card. The Manchester Evening News reports that the Catalan defender is just one of several options on their shortlist as they move through a crucial rebuild of the left side of their defence.

The need is obvious. Luke Shaw is heading into the final year of his contract. Diogo Dalot has increasingly been pushed higher and wider, and both Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are naturally right-backs being stretched across the back line. A specialist left-back is no longer a luxury for United; it is a requirement.

Balde fits the profile. Young, quick, technically polished, already tested at the highest level. United have already opened lines of communication with Mendes, but they are also weighing a far cheaper alternative: Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander. The 19-year-old Spaniard has a release clause of around £16 million, a fraction of what Barcelona want for Balde.

That difference in cost shapes United’s strategy. They are watching Balde closely, staying in contact, but have stopped short of placing an official bid. For now, only Benfica have put something concrete on the table, and Sport reports that their proposal falls well below Barça’s valuation.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are lurking as perhaps the most capable of actually meeting Barcelona’s financial demands. Their interest is real, but their move depends on outgoings. They need to sell before they can seriously step into the race.

Barcelona’s position is delicate. They must create financial room and ease the pressure on their wage bill, yet they are determined not to let Balde go on the cheap. Only a few months ago, they valued him at around €40–45 million, and that benchmark still guides their thinking.

As the door opens for his exit, the club’s sporting department has already started hunting for a replacement on the left. Without Balde, the flank would fall to Cancelo and Gerard Martin, a thin layer of cover for a squad expected to fight across multiple competitions.

So the situation tightens: a restless player, a club needing funds, and a Premier League giant searching for a long-term answer at left-back. Who blinks first?
