Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70m

Manchester United have finally got their man. Carlos Baleba is in the door at Old Trafford, and it has cost them big.

The 22-year-old Brighton midfielder has completed a move to United in a deal worth up to £70m, becoming the club’s third midfield signing of the summer after Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The Cameroon international has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, underlining just how central United believe he will be to their rebuild.

United have agreed an initial £65m fee with Brighton, with a further £5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause included. That pushes the club’s outlay on midfielders this summer to around £148m, a statement of intent in a department that has been ripped up and rapidly reassembled.

Casemiro has gone. Manuel Ugarte is sidelined with a serious knee injury. In their place, United have moved aggressively: Santos from Chelsea, Tielemans from Aston Villa, and now Baleba from the south coast, all before the new season properly settles.

Baleba's Ambitions

For Baleba, this is the move he has been waiting for.

“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” he said. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.

“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.

“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”

United know this has not been a straightforward pursuit. They tried to prise Baleba away from Brighton last summer but backed off once it became clear he would not be allowed to leave. His form last season did not always match the early hype, yet United’s interest never truly faded. A week ago they moved decisively, and this time Brighton were ready to deal.

Inside the club, the belief in his ceiling is obvious. Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, did not hold back in his assessment.

“Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”

United have paid for potential, but they have also paid for presence. A third new midfielder, a reshaped core, and a manager in Michael Carrick who built his own career on control and intelligence in that very position. Now the question hangs over Old Trafford: can this new-look engine room finally drag United back to where they think they belong?
