Manchester United Sign Baleba for £70m in Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United have finally got their man.

The club have completed the signing of Brighton midfielder Baleba in a deal worth up to £70 million, a statement of intent after a stuttering start to the season. United will pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed a contract at Old Trafford until 2031, with the option of a further year. It is not just a big fee; it is a long-term bet. Bruno Fernandes, speaking at the PFA Awards after being named the 2026 Players' Player of the Year, did not hide his enthusiasm about the signing.

"He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball," Fernandes said, underlining exactly why United have pushed so hard to get the deal done. "Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years."

Response to a shaky start

The timing of the transfer matters.

United opened their league campaign with a flat 2-0 defeat away at promoted Hull City, a result that cut through the optimism of pre-season. Santos and Tielemans both started alongside Fernandes in that game, but the midfield never truly imposed itself. United looked ponderous, short of intensity and control.

Now comes Baleba, dropped straight into a dressing room that knows it must respond quickly.

His integration will be central to Carrick’s attempts to jolt United’s season into life. The manager needs a midfield that can press, recover, and then surge forward with the ball. Baleba has been bought to do exactly that.
