Manchester United Rejects Spurs' £45m Djed Spence Offer

Manchester United’s search for a new full-back has taken another twist – and this time, it’s ended with Djed Spence heading for Italy instead of Old Trafford.

INEOS, wary of Luke Shaw’s ongoing fitness issues and the lack of reliable depth at full-back, are in the market for reinforcements this summer. Lewis Hall remains a leading target, but Newcastle United’s hardline stance has forced United to scan the market for alternatives.

Spence was one of those names. Briefly.

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham offered the England international to several Premier League clubs, including United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Everton. Spurs, buoyed by the 26-year-old’s strong World Cup performances, slapped a £45 million price tag on him.

United walked away.

The Old Trafford hierarchy viewed the fee as excessive, just as other English clubs did, and no deal moved forward. The pattern was familiar: when United’s name is involved, the price climbs. This time, INEOS refused to play along.

Now Sky Sports report that Spence is on the verge of joining Inter Milan instead. The Italian giants have agreed a £30 million deal with Tottenham, with a 10 per cent sell-on clause included. A sizeable fee, but £15 million less than Spurs’ initial demand to Premier League suitors.

The gap is telling. Inter get their versatile full-back, capable of operating on either flank, at a price English clubs were never offered. United, once again, see a target move elsewhere – but on their own terms.

The decision fits a broader pattern at Old Trafford this summer. The club also passed up the chance to sign highly rated Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly, and academy left-back Harry Amass is expected to depart. Yet those calls are understood to reflect a belief that Hall can still be prised away from Newcastle.

United’s recruitment team have not put all their eggs in that basket. Low-cost alternatives are lined up: David Raum, Jorge Salinas and Joaquin Seys are all under consideration if Newcastle refuse to soften their position on Hall.

For now, Spence is San Siro-bound, Tottenham bank a £30 million fee, and United continue to hold their nerve. The question is how long they can keep walking away from inflated demands before the market finally bends to their new reality – or forces them into a corner.
