Manchester United’s New Midfield Era Begins: Key Debuts Against Hull City

Manchester United’s new era in midfield is about to get its first real test.

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are in line for their competitive debuts on Saturday as United open the 2026/27 Premier League season away at newly-promoted Hull City in the early 12.30pm BST kick-off.

New faces, new balance

This won’t be a complete overhaul like the one across town at Manchester City, but the heart of United’s side is changing. For four years, Casemiro anchored the midfield and shaped the team’s identity. Now Michael Carrick has to redraw that map.

The big question: which two sit behind Bruno Fernandes?

Tielemans is expected to start, offering control and passing range from deep. Santos, still only 22, is likely to feature at some stage against the Tigers, even if he doesn’t make the XI. Carrick has options; he also has decisions that will define the tone of United’s season.

Santos’ Chelsea frustration fuels United move

Santos did not cross from Chelsea to Old Trafford to watch from the bench again.

Last season told the story. Just 13 league starts. Only three starts in the Champions League. Forty-three appearances in all competitions, but 14 of those came with him stuck as an unused substitute.

Chelsea rated him. They did not rush to push him out of the door. Yet the reality was blunt: as long as Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo stayed fit, Santos’ role would remain limited, particularly in a season without European football to spread the minutes around.

United offered something different — a bigger stage, a clearer pathway, and a manager in Carrick who understands the position better than most.

‘Superb football intelligence’ for Carrick to mould

Those who worked with Santos earlier in his career have been effusive. As reported by Cerys Jones, former coaches have praised his “superb football intelligence” and “elite potential”. That kind of profile fits perfectly with what Carrick wants from his midfield: players who see pictures early, take the ball under pressure, and dictate tempo.

It also explains why there is such excitement among United supporters. They have seen flashes of his talent at Chelsea. Now they want to see whether regular starts in a defined role can turn promise into authority in the Premier League.

Hull away, on opening day, is not the grandest stage. But it is the kind of test that reveals who adapts quickly to new surroundings and new responsibility.

INEOS push on with Baleba pursuit

While Santos and Tielemans prepare for their first steps in red, the rebuild is not finished.

INEOS are still driving hard for a third midfield signing, with Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba the chosen target. United’s opening bid — £60 million up front plus £5m in add-ons — falls short of Brighton’s valuation, but there is optimism that the two clubs can eventually meet in the middle.

If they do, Carrick could end the window with a completely reshaped midfield: Tielemans’ experience, Santos’ intelligence, and Baleba’s dynamism all feeding into Fernandes’ creativity.

For now, though, it starts on Saturday lunchtime, on Humberside, with two debuts and one big question hanging over United’s season: is this the midfield that finally drags them back to the top of the Premier League?
