Manchester United Back Off Pursuit of Lewis Hall

Manchester United have stepped away from a move for Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall, backing off a pursuit that had been building all summer.

The 21-year-old, who left Chelsea for Newcastle in search of regular minutes and a clearer pathway, has grown into one of the Premier League’s most coveted young left-backs. After an initial loan, his permanent switch in 2024 has paid off handsomely for the Magpies. He has locked down the left side, shown he can step into midfield when required and become a key pillar in a side that lifted the Carabao Cup last season.

That versatility has not gone unnoticed. Hall’s rise across three seasons in the north east turned him into a priority target for United, who have been tracking him closely. He carried his form into last season as well, which made his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England World Cup squad all the more striking. Tuchel looked elsewhere. Top-flight scouts did not.

United quickly homed in on Hall as their preferred solution at left-back. Reports suggested the player would be open to trading St James’ Park for Old Trafford, and the departure of Eddie Howe – who shares an agent with Hall – only added fuel to the story. The sense grew that United might test Newcastle’s resolve before the window closed.

Then reality bit.

Newcastle’s hierarchy have been unwavering. Hall is regarded as one of the club’s “untouchables”, an England international around whom they want to build, not cash in. Any deal, they made clear, would take an astronomical fee.

According to The Athletic, that is precisely the problem for United. The club are said to be cautious about committing major funds so close to Tuesday’s deadline and are, at least for now, ruling out paying the level of money it would take to drag Hall out of Tyneside.

So the strategy shifts. A permanent marquee signing gives way to short-term cover.

A loan move is now viewed as the most realistic option, with Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde emerging as a possible stopgap until next summer. Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas have also been mentioned as alternatives as United search for support and competition for Luke Shaw.

Hall, meanwhile, remains locked in at Newcastle with three years left on his current deal. And his manager is in no mood to entertain the idea of losing him.

After Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, new boss Matthias Jaissle was confronted directly about the speculation by Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel on Viaplay. Schmeichel, with a grin, told him: “We’re after your left-back!”

Jaissle’s reply was instant and emphatic.

No chance! No chance!

The message could hardly have been clearer.

Speaking separately to Sky Sports, Jaissle did admit that Newcastle are still working on late-window business, but on their terms, not anyone else’s.

“I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it’s depending also if players are leaving as well,” he said. “For sure, there will be adjustments made, the needs are clear. The management knows about the needs and we are all aligned.

“We will use the remaining time in the best possible way, but also we trust the players who are already here.”

United, for their part, have not been idle this summer. They have already reinforced midfield with Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and brought in experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow as back-up to Senne Lammens. A £70 million deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba is also in place, with the player granted permission to undergo a medical ahead of a move to the Theatre of Dreams.

The spine is being rebuilt. The left flank, though, will have to wait.

Hall stays in black and white. United look elsewhere. With the deadline looming, the question now is not whether they can prise Newcastle’s “untouchable” away, but whether a short-term fix at left-back will be enough for the season that’s about to hit full speed.
