Manchester United's Left-Back Search Intensifies with David Raum

Manchester United have drawn up a shortlist for a new left-back – and David Raum is firmly on it – but hesitation over the RB Leipzig defender’s age and price is slowing any move.

United have already thrown close to £150m at their midfield rebuild this summer, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That spend has left other areas exposed, and nowhere is the gap more glaring than at left-back, where the club no longer feel they can lean on the fitness of Luke Shaw across a full season.

Lewis Hall was identified as the preferred solution. The Newcastle United defender is widely viewed as United’s top target for the position, and there is understood to be buy‑in from the player’s side. The problem? Newcastle are not selling this summer. That avenue is closed.

Raum on the list – but not at any price

BILD, via Sport Witness, report that Raum is one of the names on United’s left-back shortlist. Leipzig would ideally like around €40m (roughly £34m) for the 28-year-old, who produced ten goal involvements in the Bundesliga last season and is heading into the final year of his contract.

Leipzig know that contract clock is ticking. The German club are said to accept they may have to drop below that asking price if they are to cash in now.

United, though, are described as “dithering” over whether to commit what is viewed internally as a relatively large fee for a player approaching 30, with the option of a younger, more developmental signing still on the table.

Raum himself has already acknowledged the situation. Speaking earlier this week, he said:

“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract. I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”

The door is not shut. It’s just not flung open either.

United under pressure as deadline looms

Time is the problem. The window is running into its final days and United still do not have their left-back.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has underlined how active the club remain in that area, insisting on his YouTube channel that the final stretch of the market could be busy at Old Trafford.

“I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” Romano said. “So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back. I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee.”

That line is telling. United are not chasing a marquee name at this stage. Romano revealed that Alejandro Balde was discussed in a recent call with Jorge Mendes, but the financial package required – transfer fee and salary – has been deemed too expensive “at least for now”.

Instead, the club are eyeing what Romano likened to the Sergio Reguilon deal: an experienced, international‑level full-back who can arrive quickly, provide competition and give the manager a reliable option, without blowing up the remaining budget.

“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player,” Romano added, stressing that United are exploring that profile rather than a blockbuster signing.

A decisive few days

So the picture is clear. Raum is admired, available for the right price and open to a move. Leipzig are ready to talk. United need a left-back.

What is not clear yet is whether United are prepared to commit serious money to a 28-year-old in the final year of his deal, or pivot to a cheaper, stop‑gap solution that mirrors past late-window business.

Romano expects United to act before the deadline. The question now is simple: do they back the shortlist’s headline name in Raum, or gamble on finding that “guarantee” profile at a lower cost in the frantic final days?
