Manchester United are ramping up their efforts to keep prolific academy striker JJ Gabriel, as Chelsea and a host of Premier League and European clubs circle for his signature.

The 15-year-old, viewed inside Carrington as one of the brightest prospects in the club’s youth system, has been in devastating form for the Under-18s, hitting 29 goals in 32 appearances. That kind of output has not gone unnoticed.

Chelsea are understood to be leading the external chase for Gabriel and are described as his strongest suitor outside Old Trafford, with other top-flight and European sides also tracking his progress. United, though, have no intention of letting one of their crown jewels slip away.

The club are pushing hard to secure a new deal and are said to be confident of tying him down. Once Gabriel becomes eligible to sign scholarship terms in October, interest around his future is expected to spike, and United want to be in a position of strength long before that moment arrives.

Behind the scenes, staff are working to ensure Gabriel’s rapid rise continues in Manchester, determined that his development and pathway stay rooted at Old Trafford rather than being diverted to London or abroad.

The drive to retain Gabriel comes in a summer where United have already reshaped key parts of their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League. The arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have reinforced Michael Carrick’s midfield, and the club are still in the market for a third midfielder, a left-back, a winger and potentially a centre-forward.

Search for a Striker

That search for a striker stretches beyond the academy.

United have stepped up their interest in Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi, according to reports, with the Italian now firmly on the radar of Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Barcelona. His price is expected to be in the region of €45-50m, around £43m.

Barcelona are currently viewed as favourites as they accelerate their pursuit following the departure of Robert Lewandowski. The financial reality at Camp Nou, though, could complicate any deal at that level, leaving the door open for a Premier League move if the Spanish side cannot reach Brugge’s valuation.

Industry sources cited in the report suggest that Chelsea, United and Spurs see Tresoldi as a comparatively sensible option in a market where fees have spiralled, with his asking price considered attractive relative to some of the “ridiculously inflated” sums seen this window.

United, then, find themselves fighting on two fronts: battling Europe’s elite for an emerging No. 9 in Tresoldi, while doing everything they can to ensure that in Gabriel, they do not lose the next one they have already built.
