Manchester United Pursue £14m Jorge Salinas as Left-Back Solution
Manchester United’s search for a long-term solution at left-back has taken a sharp turn towards Spain, with Racing Santander teenager Jorge Salinas emerging as a serious option late in the window.
United are weighing up a move for the 19-year-old, who has a £14 million release clause, after Racing sporting director Chema Aragon openly admitted the club would have little choice but to sell if that figure is met.
“You’re all going on about this every day. First, it’s about the release clause; then, it’s about one club or another,” Aragon said, via SportWitness. “Thankfully, the kid is focused. If someone comes along, brings the €16m, and the boy likes the team, he’ll leave.”
That clarity has put United on alert.
United’s left-back dilemma
The need is obvious. Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract, and the position has quietly become one of the biggest question marks in Michael Carrick’s squad.
Patrick Dorgu has been pushed further forward and now looks more like a winger than a full-back. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have both filled in on the left, but they remain right-backs playing out of position rather than natural long-term answers.
Harry Amass is highly rated inside the club and seen as a genuine prospect, yet he has no top-flight experience. Throwing him straight into a Premier League season would be a gamble United are reluctant to take without another senior option in place.
Newcastle’s Lewis Hall had emerged as the preferred target earlier in the summer, ticking the boxes of Premier League experience and room to grow. But that chase has stalled. After major departures at St James’ Park — including Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali — Newcastle are under no pressure to lose another young asset, and a deal for Hall is now viewed as unlikely.
With less than two weeks left in the window, United have been forced to look elsewhere. Salinas has moved quickly up the list.
Salinas in demand
Salinas was one of Racing Santander’s standout performers last season, playing a key role in their promotion to La Liga. Operating from left-back, he delivered seven assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, numbers that have inevitably drawn attention from bigger clubs.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have both been linked with the Spain U19 international, and Atletico have already tested Racing’s resolve. According to Spanish outlet Infobae, the Madrid club saw a £12m bid rejected as it fell short of the release clause.
Racing have tried to protect their asset. The club have reportedly put a contract extension on the table, even though Salinas is already tied down until 2029. For now, the player is said to be holding his ground, waiting to see what unfolds as the deadline approaches.
Atletico were expected to push hard to close the deal, but hesitation has crept in. That pause has cracked the door open for United.
Deadline pressure and a potential opening
Infobae report that Atletico have now set themselves a weekend deadline to either complete the signing or walk away. The message is blunt: if there is no breakthrough, they will step aside — and that would hand United a clear run at the youngster.
United, for their part, are watching the situation closely. The profile fits: young, attack-minded, proven in senior football, and available at a fixed price. With Shaw’s future unresolved and makeshift options already stretched, the appeal is obvious.
Racing know exactly where they stand. Meet the clause, convince the player, and the deal happens. Fail, and Salinas starts the season as a La Liga full-back with a long contract and growing attention.
With the clock ticking on the window and Atletico wavering, the question is simple: do United turn interest into action and trigger the clause, or risk seeing another left-back solution slip away?
