Manchester United Prodigy JJ Gabriel Requests to Leave Club

Manchester United have been jolted by the shock news that 15-year-old prodigy JJ Gabriel has asked to leave the club – on the eve of what was set to be his first involvement with the senior squad.

The teenager was due to be named in the first-team group for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton at Old Trafford, a move that would have put him on the brink of becoming United’s youngest ever player in the competition. Instead, the club have been informed he wants his registration cancelled.

United officials are said to be stunned. Internally, there is a firm belief they have laid out a clear pathway for Gabriel and his family, underlining how highly they rate the north London-born forward. That has included meetings with Ruben Amorim during his spell as head coach and with Sir Alex Ferguson, powerful signals of how seriously the club view his development.

The request has not only surprised United; it has left them searching for answers. They are unclear what has triggered such a drastic step at a moment when Gabriel appeared to be accelerating towards a senior breakthrough.

From the club’s perspective, the story is far from over. United believe the situation is recoverable, pointing to the time left on his current agreement. They insist Gabriel, who is contracted until the end of the season, cannot simply be deregistered despite his wish to leave. Under current rules he cannot sign a professional deal until he turns 17 in October 2025, though he will be eligible to agree a scholarship when he turns 16.

Gabriel has been at United since the age of 11 and is regarded as one of the brightest talents to come through Carrington in years. His numbers at youth level back that up. He scored 26 goals in 29 games last season while regularly playing above his age group, and he marked his Uefa Youth League debut last week with a hat-trick against Sabah.

He has already broken ground at the club, becoming the most recent – and youngest – winner of United’s prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award. His progress has been rapid enough that he has trained frequently with the first team and earned two caps for England Under-17s.

After that 5-0 win over Sabah, United’s lead under-21 coach Adam Lawrence underlined just how invested the club are in his rise. “JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club right the way through,” he said. “He’s been at the club for so long. He’s got real good relationships with the players, with the staff, so I think over the course of time obviously that helps as well.

“At the moment, just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, it’s about making sure that he’s getting the right exposure across different levels. We’re obviously not perfect but it’s definitely something we put a lot of thought into.”

That carefully managed pathway now hangs in the balance. Interest from Europe’s elite has hovered around Gabriel for some time. Barcelona and Manchester City have both been linked with the forward, with reports last year suggesting his family were considering a move.

For United, this was supposed to be the week a homegrown striker stepped closer to the Stretford End. Instead, they are locked in a battle just to keep him at the club long enough to see whether that promise ever reaches the Old Trafford pitch.
