Manchester United's JJ Gabriel and Harry Amass Future Decisions

Manchester United’s academy conveyor belt rolled on in ruthless style on Monday night – and now some big decisions are looming.

A 5-0 dismantling of Ipswich Town in Premier League 2 at Leigh Sports Village showcased two of the club’s most exciting young prospects, JJ Gabriel and Harry Amass, and left Michael Carrick juggling development with first-team needs.

Amass impresses – but could still be heading out

Harry Amass has spent the summer on the fringes of the senior squad, backing up Luke Shaw and looking every inch a player ready to push on. The 19-year-old’s reputation grew last season with an excellent spell at Sheffield Wednesday before an injury-hit second half of the campaign following his switch to Norwich City.

His performances in pre-season, and again for the U21s against Ipswich, have clearly caught Carrick’s eye. Yet, with the transfer window ticking towards Tuesday’s deadline, the manager admitted the left-back could still leave on loan.

“It comes to this stage [of the window], and there's always a little bit where, and this is not just Harry by the way, this is just the stage of the window and putting squads together and dynamics of changes, and younger players and loans and not loans, and all sorts of different scenarios,” Carrick said.

United have not managed to bring in a new left-back this summer, a gap that might have opened the door for Amass to stay and compete. Even so, a temporary move is now viewed as more likely than a permanent exit as the club tries to balance his pathway with the demands of the senior squad.

“I think we always try to do the best for each individual player, as well as keeping the group strong,” Carrick added. “I've been really pleased with Harry. I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens. But he played really well the other night.”

The message is clear: United rate him, but they want him playing regular football. Whether that happens at Old Trafford or elsewhere this season will be decided in the next few hours.

JJ Gabriel lights it up at 15

If Amass represents the near future, JJ Gabriel is the electric glimpse of what might come next.

On his competitive debut for the U21s, the 15-year-old stole the show. One stunning goal, two assists, and a performance that made a Premier League 2 game look like a schoolyard mismatch at times.

Carrick was in the stands at Leigh Sports Village and left enthused by what he saw – not just from Gabriel, but from the entire group.

“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” he said. “Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see that the quality. I really enjoyed the game.

“Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that.”

Then came the nod to Gabriel, already training regularly with older age groups and now beginning to test himself against players several years his senior.

“JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”

No hype from Carrick, just a measured recognition that United have something special on their hands and must handle it carefully.

Amass’s immediate future may hinge on a deadline-day decision. Gabriel’s, by contrast, is a longer story – but nights like this suggest it could be a spectacular one.
