Manchester United Faces JJ Gabriel Exit Amid Carrick Support

Manchester United could lose teenage talent JJ Gabriel to Real Madrid or Barcelona for a fraction of his potential value, just as pressure builds around the club’s hierarchy and Michael Carrick’s future.

The 15-year-old forward has already informed United he wants out. Earlier this week, Gabriel issued a formal request to have his registration cancelled with immediate effect, aiming to become a free agent ahead of his 16th birthday on October 6.

United, though, will not walk away empty-handed if he lands at one of Spain’s giants.

JJ Gabriel talks with Real Madrid and Barcelona

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed on September 18 that Gabriel has held talks with both Barcelona and Real Madrid, with sources describing those conversations as positive.

The Daily Mail reports that if Gabriel ultimately signs for either club, United will receive around £300,000 in compensation — a modest figure for a player coveted by two of Europe’s biggest sides.

Gabriel holds an Irish passport, which means he can move abroad once he turns 16. That looming date now feels like a countdown clock for United, who risk seeing a highly rated prospect walk away for what, in elite academy terms, is a minimal fee.

Wilcox stands by Carrick as boardroom doubts emerge

While Gabriel edges towards the exit, the focus inside Old Trafford’s corridors of power is fixed on the dugout.

On September 17, Bailey reported that United’s chiefs have decided to keep Michael Carrick as manager. Co-owners INEOS have no immediate plan to dismiss him, despite a stuttering start: four points from four Premier League matches and a League Cup defeat at Old Trafford to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Jason Wilcox, the club’s director of football, is understood to be firmly behind Carrick. That backing has been echoed publicly by prominent United fan, YouTuber and presenter Mark Goldbridge, who has over 1.1 million followers on X.

Goldbridge claimed on X at 9:03am on September 18 that there is at least one dissenting voice in the boardroom.

“Someone on the board isn’t convinced by Carrick. It’s not Wilcox though. Wilcox is firmly with Carrick and believes United should stick with his decision for the long term,” he wrote.

Goldbridge then turned his fire on Wilcox himself, questioning why the director of football remains so influential at the club.

“The BIG question is why Wilcox is still here? Everything he’s touched has been catastrophic and he had no CV for this job in the first place. How he’s still calling the shots is incredible,” he posted.

He also outlined Wilcox’s remit at United: to stay close to training, support Carrick on coaching matters and drive recruitment. Since arriving in April 2024, Wilcox has already overseen the dismissals of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

For a fanbase already uneasy with the direction of the club, the idea of a divided board, a struggling team and a director of football under fire only adds to the sense of volatility.

Tuchel’s blunt message to Maguire

Away from Old Trafford but still circling United’s orbit, Harry Maguire’s international future remains under a harsh spotlight.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has delivered a clear warning to the Manchester United defender after leaving him out of his squad for the 2026 World Cup finals in the summer — and again for the September and October international fixtures.

Maguire, who made his name at Leicester City before his big-money move to United, publicly voiced his frustration at missing out on the World Cup squad. Tuchel has now made it plain he did not appreciate that reaction.

Asked if Maguire’s response had made it harder to recall him, Tuchel, quoted by The Mirror, said: “It doesn’t help. It does not help.

“I will not hold it against him for the rest of his life because I’m not that type of person. I can forget easily and quickly, but I didn’t like it and it doesn’t help.”
