Manchester United Eyes Jarrad Branthwaite for Defensive Rebuild

Manchester United’s search for a new defensive leader has a familiar name at the top of the list: Jarrad Branthwaite.

Club scouts have been instructed to monitor the Everton centre-back closely across the entire season, with figures at Old Trafford convinced he could become the cornerstone of Michael Carrick’s back line if he proves his body can withstand the demands of the Premier League.

The interest is not new. The 24-year-old has sat high on United’s recruitment board for several seasons after a series of commanding displays for Everton. What has changed is the urgency. Just four games into the new Premier League campaign, concerns over United’s defensive resilience have sharpened Carrick’s focus on elite, long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes.

United’s long look at Branthwaite

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has confirmed that the club’s talent spotters are back on Branthwaite in a big way, especially now he has re-established himself in David Moyes’ starting XI.

“Branthwaite is somebody who has been high on their list for a long time,” Brown said. “Man United are going to have scouts watching him closely this season, because if he can get back to the sort of form he’s shown before, he will certainly be an option.”

That last word – “option” – comes with a major caveat. United backed off previously when the defender’s hamstring problems wrecked his 2025-26 campaign. Branthwaite missed 31 matches across all competitions that season, a red flag for any club planning to build a defence around him.

This year, United want a full body of evidence. Not just a strong month or a standout run of games, but durability from August to May. Only then will they consider turning long-term admiration into a formal bid.

Everton’s stance and the January question

Anyone expecting a January tug-of-war is likely to be disappointed. A mid-season move is viewed as highly unlikely.

Everton have made their position plain. Branthwaite is central to Moyes’ plans and sits at the heart of a partnership with James Tarkowski that underpins the team’s defensive structure. The club have already proved how far they will go to keep him, batting away interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City before tying him to a lucrative contract extension running to 2030.

That deal gives Everton leverage and time. It also means United know any approach in the winter window would be met with a firm refusal.

So this is a slow burn, not a scramble. United intend to watch, wait and gather every possible piece of data on his fitness and consistency before deciding whether to test Everton’s resolve.

Eyes on the summer

The calculation at Old Trafford is simple: if Branthwaite stays fit, United move.

Senior figures believe Everton’s stance could soften next summer, particularly if the defender delivers a full, uninterrupted campaign and reinforces his status as one of the most reliable centre-backs in the division. At that point, the combination of a major fee and the player’s ambitions could open the door that currently looks bolted shut.

For now, Moyes continues to lean heavily on Branthwaite and Tarkowski to keep Everton steady. Every clean sheet, every dominant aerial display, every game he gets through unscathed will be logged and dissected by United’s recruitment team.

Carrick, meanwhile, cannot afford to wait on one man. While Branthwaite remains a prime target, United are actively weighing up alternative defensive options as they map out a long-term rebuild of their back line.

The watching brief is clear: if Branthwaite’s body holds and his form matches the faith United have long placed in him, this season may be the prelude to one of next summer’s defining transfer battles.
