Manchester United Eye Josip Stanisic for Defensive Overhaul

Manchester United spent the summer ripping up and rebuilding their midfield at Michael Carrick’s request. Andrey Santos arrived. Youri Tielemans arrived. Carlos Baleba arrived. A late move for Louis Page did not.

Last year, the co-owners poured their energy – and money – into the attack. Logic inside Old Trafford says the next big project will be the defence. The need is obvious, the timing less so.

Carrick wanted reinforcements across the pitch, but the 20-time English champions chose restraint at the back. For now.

United eye Stanisic as defensive reset looms

Almost every defender in the squad is playing for his future. Only two are viewed as truly safe. In that context, United’s recruitment team have gone back to a familiar template: versatility.

Enter Josip Stanisic.

The Bayern Munich defender has emerged as one of the most closely watched players of his profile in Europe. United are tracking him, and they are far from alone.

Stanisic is a coach’s dream in modern football. A right-back by trade, the 26-year-old has the size and awareness to slot in at centre-back and the balance to operate on the left. Two-footed, tactically disciplined, and comfortable in different systems – exactly the kind of plug-and-play option Old Trafford has leaned on in the past.

Last season underlined that flexibility. He made 43 appearances in all competitions: 26 at right-back, 15 at left-back, and two in central defence. Wherever Bayern needed him, he stepped in.

For a United side staring at a looming defensive overhaul, that profile makes a lot of sense.

Heavy competition, heavier price

According to Fussballdaten, United are one of several European heavyweights monitoring the Croatia international. PSG and Real Madrid are in the frame. So are Arsenal and Liverpool. No one is getting a free run at this.

The problem is not just the crowd around him. It is the contract and the cost.

Stanisic is tied to Bayern until 2029. The Bundesliga champions are under no pressure to sell and are expected to demand a premium before they even sit down at the table.

Reports in Germany suggest Bayern will only entertain offers in the region of £47 million to £56 million – roughly €55 million to €65 million – just to open negotiations. On top of that, the German club are expected to insist on sizeable performance-related bonuses and a sell-on clause in any deal.

Those are the sort of numbers and conditions that usually do not scare Manchester United. On paper, the fee is within reach, especially for a player with substantial Bundesliga and European Cup experience who can cover right-back and centre-back – two positions the club know they must strengthen.

But money is only one side of the equation.

Will Stanisic even want to leave?

The bigger question may be Stanisic himself. He is a regular in Munich, embedded in a squad that competes for the Champions League every season. Walking away from that – from a long contract at Bayern and a clearly defined role – is not a simple decision.

Any move would also collide with INEOS’ emerging transfer strategy. The new regime has leaned heavily towards Premier League-proven signings, valuing adaptation and reliability over potential teething problems from abroad.

Stanisic does not fit that brief. He fits almost everything else.

So United watch. They wait. The midfield has been rebuilt, the attack was upgraded last year, and the backline is next in line for surgery.

Whether the defensive reset is built around a Bundesliga all-rounder like Josip Stanisic, or someone closer to home, will say plenty about how bold INEOS really intend to be.
