Manchester United's Derby Dilemma: Carrick's Tough Choices Against City

Manchester United’s attack is suddenly crowded with stories, and Michael Carrick has a derby to pick for.

Fresh from a ruthless 4-0 dismantling of Sabah in their Champions League opener, United now walk straight into the heat of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester City. The mood has lifted, but the table hasn’t: one win from three league games means even a derby victory won’t be enough to climb above their neighbours.

Carrick knows it. He didn’t hide from it.

“Results-wise, it hasn't been the start we wanted, we wanted more points in the league,” he admitted after the Sabah win. The performance soothed a few nerves. The situation hasn’t changed.

Carrick, Maresca and a new derby chapter

The last time these two met, it was Carrick’s first game back in the Old Trafford dugout. United won 2-0, a statement result that launched his current spell in charge and re-energised the fanbase.

This time, the new face is on the other bench.

Enzo Maresca walks into his first Manchester derby as City manager. His most recent trip to Old Trafford ended in defeat, a 2-1 loss with Chelsea in September 2025, but he arrives with momentum after a hard-fought European win over Porto. He knows the stadium, he knows the noise, and he knows what a defeat here feels like.

Now he finds out what it’s like when the place is baying for City blood.

Rashford’s Barcelona chapter – and the Gordon call

Amid the build-up, Marcus Rashford’s name still lingers in another storyline: Barcelona.

Rashford hit double figures for both goals and assists on loan at Camp Nou last season, a productive spell that seemed to set up an obvious next step. It never came. Barça chose not to turn the loan into a permanent deal and instead moved for his England team-mate Anthony Gordon.

Sporting director Deco laid out the thinking behind that call.

“One of the things we saw that was difficult last year was the fact that, when we were without Raphinha, the team's energy seemed to drop,” he told Marca. The club scoured the market for wide players but ran straight into the Premier League’s financial wall. “We looked at many wingers, but signing players in the Premier League is almost impossible, you see the figures involved.

“He (Gordon) was the profile that best fit. The great advantage is that the players are excited to come to our project.”

It was a sharp, calculated decision: Gordon’s intensity and profile over Rashford’s familiarity and numbers. For United, it meant their academy star returned, still theirs, still a headline name, still a question for every big team-sheet.

And now, as City loom, there is a genuine chance he doesn’t start.

JJ Gabriel: goals, noise and a careful plan

If Rashford’s story is about what he has already done, JJ Gabriel’s is about what might be coming.

The teenager lit up pre-season with flashes around the first team, but his competitive debut remains on hold. Instead, he announced himself again in the UEFA Youth League, scoring a hat-trick against Sabah and dragging more eyes towards Carrington.

Inside the club, the message is clear: excitement, yes. But no shortcuts.

“JJ is surrounded by people that really believe in him,” academy coach Adam Lawrence said. “From the top of the club right the way through. Where he's been at the club for so long, he's got good relationships with the players, with the staff.

“Over the course of time that helps as well. At the moment just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, making sure that he's getting the right exposure across different levels.

“We’re obviously not perfect but it's definitely something we put a lot of thought into. So yeah, it's good to see him just enjoying his football and in a good place for sure.”

The hat-trick sharpened the noise around him. The club’s response has been to double down on the plan: manage his minutes, stretch his challenges, and build a player who can live in this fixture, not just appear in it.

Big decisions before City

Carrick now stands between the immediate need of a derby and the longer arc of his squad.

Rashford is back from Barcelona with his reputation intact but his future role still being shaped. Gabriel is scoring freely below the senior level and edging closer to that first real step. Around them, established names are also knocking after a four-goal European win.

Only 11 can start against City. Not all of the stories can play out at once.

Old Trafford will demand energy, edge and courage on Sunday. The question is which attacking talents Carrick trusts to deliver it when the derby whistle goes.
