Manchester United Seek Chelsea Defenders as Left-Back Solution

Manchester United have poured time, money and energy into overhauling their squad this summer. With the window now in its final days, the work still isn’t done.

The midfield rebuild has taken centre stage. Around £150 million has been committed to the engine room, with Andrey Santos arriving from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans joining from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba snapped up from Brighton. After two summers focused on attack and defence, the core of Michael Carrick’s side looks very different.

Yet one problem refuses to go away. Left-back.

Left-back search turns to short-term fix

United’s recruitment team have spent weeks scouring the market for a long-term answer on the left side of defence. The clock has beaten them.

Luke Shaw is now into the final year of his contract. Patrick Dorgu, signed with plenty of promise, is viewed by Carrick more as a winger than a natural full-back. The balance of the squad is off, and the manager knows it.

Preferred targets have drifted out of reach, either too expensive or simply unavailable this late in the window. That has forced a change of plan. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, United are now weighing up a short-term loan solution at left-back before the deadline.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube show, drew a clear comparison with the club’s 2023 move for Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham, when United dipped into the loan market to plug a gap.

"I will not be surprised if they [United] end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee, so maybe not a superstar name like Balde, because they considered Balde... but the deal is too expensive," he said.

"But just as a comparison, you remember when United signed Sergio Reguilon? [It will be] something similar. That kind of player, an experienced left-back who can provide competition and also an international profile."

The message is obvious: forget the marquee name for now, get someone reliable through the door, and live to fight another window.

Chelsea defenders on United radar

The search is not limited to the flanks. Injuries have dragged centre-back back onto the agenda as well.

United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo and are also credited with an interest in his team-mate Josh Acheampong. The approach is clear: add depth, add experience, and protect a back line already feeling the strain.

Tosin, 28, came through Manchester City’s academy and spent 17 years at the club after joining in 2003. He broke into the first team in 2016 but made only eight senior appearances before moving to Fulham in 2020, where he established himself as a regular Premier League centre-back at Craven Cottage.

His situation at Chelsea looks increasingly fragile. He was left out of their 3-2 win over Fulham, and his No. 4 shirt has already gone to new signing Valentin Barco. According to talkSPORT, he could be available for around £20 million, a fee that would appeal to a United hierarchy trying to stretch their budget across several positions.

United’s need is obvious. With Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Leny Yoro all dealing with injuries at various points, Carrick’s options have thinned quickly. Harry Maguire remains, but the club want another senior centre-back to avoid a repeat of last season’s defensive patchwork.

Acheampong is a different case entirely. The teenager is highly rated at Stamford Bridge and is regarded as ‘untouchable’. Chelsea are not prepared to entertain offers, and United’s interest is likely to be one for the future rather than this window.

So the picture is clear. United have strengthened their midfield, reshaped their core and spent heavily. Yet as the deadline looms, the story is once again about defenders, short-term fixes and late-window negotiations.

Whether they can turn those conversations into concrete signings in the final days may define how stable Carrick’s first-choice back line looks when the real tests arrive.
