Manchester United in Talks for Bruno Fernandes' New Contract

Manchester United have begun preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, a decisive move from a club determined not to lose the heartbeat of its team just as his stock soars again.

United have already mapped out a safety net. They plan to trigger the one-year extension clause in the former Sporting CP playmaker’s current deal, a mechanism that prevents him from drifting into the final months of his contract with his market value exposed. Fernandes has around 10 months left on his £220,000-a-week agreement, but that club option stretches his commitment by a further year if needed.

United do not want to rely on legal clauses alone. The aim is clear: a fresh, long-term contract signed and sealed before the end of the calendar year, and with it, an end to the constant hum of transfer speculation around their captain.

Timing is everything. Fernandes has just delivered another reminder of why Old Trafford can ill afford to hesitate. Over the weekend he produced a blistering hat-trick and an assist in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, only days after being crowned PFA Player of the Year. It was the sort of performance that not only wins games but fuels boardroom urgency.

The interest from abroad is real and growing. Galatasaray have emerged as serious contenders for his signature, with reports of a four-year offer on the table that would effectively double his current wages. The Istanbul package is said to include a £3.5m signing-on fee, the kind of golden handshake that forces any player, particularly one entering the final stretch of an elite career, to at least listen.

This is not the first time Fernandes has stood at a crossroads. Last summer, he came strikingly close to a move to the Saudi Pro League. His agent, Miguel Pinho, held high-level talks in Riyadh with Al-Hilal, who were prepared to put an eye-watering £200m over three years in front of the midfielder. United held firm then. They are trying to make sure they never get that close again.

On the pitch, his importance is beyond dispute. Since arriving in January 2020, Fernandes has racked up 110 goals and 109 assists in 329 appearances, numbers that belong to a forward, not a midfielder. Last season he set a new Premier League record with 21 assists, underlining his status as one of the most inventive players the competition has ever seen.

He knows the responsibility that comes with those figures and with the armband. Fernandes has spoken about the demands of playing for United, the standards expected at Old Trafford and the reality that, at this level, reputations mean nothing without constant delivery. His response has been to keep delivering.

Now the club itself is changing shape. Under Michael Carrick’s leadership, United are attempting to build a new era and a fresh tactical identity. At the centre of it all sits Fernandes, the conduit between plan and execution, the player Carrick can least afford to lose as he reshapes the side.

United’s hierarchy appear to recognise that. It has been suggested the club are ready to make Fernandes their highest-paid player, with an extra year added to his deal and a weekly wage rising to around £350,000. That would be a statement as much as a contract: a clear signal that, despite the noise from Istanbul and Riyadh, the captain’s future is intended to remain in Manchester.

The question now is not whether Fernandes has earned that level of commitment. It is whether United can move quickly enough to match his ambition before another window opens and the vultures circle again.
