Manchester City Target Enzo Fernandez to Strengthen Midfield

Manchester City are already deep into blockbuster territory this summer. £116 million on Elliot Anderson, a brief stint as the most expensive British player of all time, and they are not done yet.

The Premier League champions are weighing up another huge swing at the market, this time for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, as they reshape their midfield and stare down a future without Pep Guardiola.

City reload in midfield – and look at Enzo

City’s engine room is being ripped up and rebuilt. Rodri, a Ballon d’Or winner and the metronome of this side, is being heavily linked with a return to Spain, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid circling. At the same time, City are exploring a deal for Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, another move that could easily climb into nine-figure territory.

Amid all that noise, Fernandez has moved sharply into focus.

The Argentine has emerged as a leading target, with City seen as frontrunners to drag him away from Stamford Bridge and drop another statement signing into the heart of their team. Chelsea, though, have set the terms of engagement. A deadline of August 14 has reportedly been placed on any official approach and formal talks. If City want him, they have to move – fast.

Hendry: “It would be a good addition”

The move would reunite Fernandez with Enzo Maresca, with whom he previously worked in west London. As City step into the post-Guardiola era, former defender Colin Hendry believes the profile fits.

Speaking to GOAL via Gambler Media, Hendry backed the idea:

“Yeah, with what they're trying to replace it does make sense, obviously from the fact that he's come into the Prem and done really really well with Chelsea, or you know as much as you regard how much Chelsea's done. It would be a good addition.”

City’s squad is already stacked, but that is the reality at the top.

“It's a fair old squad City's getting there now as well,” Hendry said, “but then again all the teams that are actually challenging for the big prizes have got enormous squads with talent and quality all over the place.”

The price will be enormous. Everyone knows it.

“He's going to be expensive isn't he, but then again everything's expensive these days because it's not in tens of million, it's now coming into hundreds of million and it's crazy. But that's the way the game's gone for a bit and it's going to continue like that until I don't know, you bring back the three or four foreigner rule. I don't know, I thought I'd throw that one in because that's been there before. But I think it'd be a good addition for City.”

Filling the De Bruyne and Gundogan void

City have not truly replaced the goals and drive of Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan from central midfield. That gap has lingered. Fernandez, at 25, is seen as the kind of player who could help close it – someone capable of hitting double figures from the middle of the pitch.

For Hendry, that issue has been clear for some time.

“It has been an issue if I'm being really honest because you need to weigh in with goals from most parts of the team,” he said.

Erling Haaland’s numbers mask a lot, but they do not solve everything.

“With the exception of the big man up front, [Erling] Haaland and the amount of goals he scores, but he has been ably supplied with the chances. That's another addition, if he can produce, that can weigh in with 10 goals. If he can hit double figures, then it's a big plus for City.”

That is the lure: a midfielder who can stitch play together and still punish teams in the final third.

Money, power and a reluctant seller

On the player’s side, there is unlikely to be much resistance. Personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block. Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023, currently earns around £180,000 a week at Stamford Bridge and would be in line for a rise if he crossed Manchester’s threshold.

The real fight sits with Chelsea.

With Xabi Alonso now in charge, the London club do not want to lose one of their key assets, especially to a direct Premier League rival. They are reluctant sellers and will not make this easy, no matter how big the bid or how loud the interest from the Etihad becomes.

City have the money. Chelsea have the player.
