Manchester City Signs Ayyoub Bouaddi for Record Fee

Manchester City have struck a huge deal with Lille for Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi in a move that will rewrite the Premier League’s record books.

The agreement is worth up to £86m (€100m), with City paying a fixed £81.3m and a further £4.3m tied to add-ons. At 18, Bouaddi is about to become the most expensive teenage signing in Premier League history, eclipsing the £58.9m Manchester United agreed to pay Lille for Leny Yoro earlier in 2024.

City go all-in on a new midfield leader

Lille held their ground in negotiations and have landed the fee they wanted for one of the breakout stars of this summer’s World Cup. Bouaddi lit up Morocco’s campaign, his performances – especially in a group-stage clash with Brazil – pushing him from rising prospect into one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe.

That tournament turned heads. The hair made him easy to spot; the composure and control made him impossible to ignore. On the biggest stage, he dictated games with a calm that belied his age, outshining far more established names.

City’s move is not a luxury signing. It is a rebuild statement.

With Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders all gone, the core of Pep Guardiola’s old midfield has been ripped out. On Sunday against Bournemouth, Marc Guehi was pushed into an unfamiliar role in the centre of midfield – a stopgap solution for a club used to surgical precision in that area of the pitch.

The response from the hierarchy has been ruthless: spend big, and spend on the future.

Bouaddi follows the record-breaking £116m arrival of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier in the window, another sign that City are prepared to reshape the heart of their side with youth, energy and long-term bets rather than short-term patches.

Versatility and a vacancy at the heart of City

Bouaddi brings something City desperately need: options.

He can anchor as a defensive midfielder, patrolling in front of the back four, or step higher to influence play in more advanced areas. That flexibility gives Guardiola the chance to experiment again, to redesign a midfield that has lost its old reference points.

The question now is whether Bouaddi becomes Rodri’s heir or something different altogether. City’s recruitment suggests they see him as a cornerstone, not a squad piece.

And they may not be finished.

City remain interested in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Roma’s Manu Kone as they look to further reinforce the middle of the pitch. The uncertainty around Nico Gonzalez, who has attracted interest from Newcastle, only sharpens the need for clarity and depth.

For now, though, the headline belongs to Bouaddi. The teenager who outshone Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes on the World Cup stage is about to walk into a dressing room built on serial success, with a record fee on his shoulders and a vacancy at the very centre of Manchester City’s next great team.
