Manchester City Sign Allan Elias for €40 Million
Manchester City have added another piece to their attacking puzzle, sealing the signing of Brazilian winger Allan Elias from Palmeiras on a five-year contract.
The 22-year-old becomes City's sixth arrival of the summer, with the Premier League champions paying around €40 million ($47 million) for a player they believe can grow into a major force in Europe. Elias comes in after rising through the academy at Palmeiras and racking up 96 first-team appearances for the Sao Paulo giants.
City’s Director of Football Hugo Viana made no attempt to play down the club’s expectations.
“Allan is a really exciting player, and we think he will be a big addition to the squad,” Viana said in a statement. “He has shown throughout his short career so far that he will fight to be the best he can be.”
The move continues a busy window for City. Elliot Anderson, Geronimo Rulli, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Jeremy Monga and Pierce Charles have already walked through the door. Elias, though, carries the weight of a sizeable fee and the spotlight that comes with being an attacking signing from Brazil.
For the player himself, the step is as big as it gets.
“This is a surreal moment for me. Manchester City, with everything they have won over the past 15 years, are one of the most attractive clubs in the world for players,” Allan said. “To be able to sit here today and say I have joined them is the proudest moment of my life. I love Palmeiras and always will -- but the decision to come to City was an easy one.”
Born in Florianopolis, Elias now joins a lineage of Brazilians who have shaped City’s modern era. He spoke openly about wanting to follow the trail laid down by Gabriel Jesus, Ederson and Fernandinho, all of whom lifted Premier League titles in sky blue.
He hopes to be, in his own words, “another good Brazilian” in the Premier League. City believe he can be much more than that.
