Manchester City Eyes Record-Breaking Move for Enzo Fernández

Manchester City are preparing to test Chelsea’s resolve with an opening bid for Enzo Fernández before the transfer window shuts, according to BBC Sport, in a move that would detonate the final week of the market.

Chelsea have set a minimum price of £120m for the 25-year-old Argentina international. At that figure, Fernández would become the second-most expensive signing in Premier League history, behind only Alexander Isak’s £125m switch to Liverpool. It would also shatter City’s own transfer record for the second time in a matter of weeks.

Maresca’s missing piece

Enzo Maresca has made no secret inside the club of how central Fernández is to his rebuild. The new City manager views the Chelsea midfielder as the fulcrum around which he can construct a new-look engine room at the Etihad.

The relationship between the pair runs deeper than a scouting report. Maresca and Fernández have stayed close since the Italian’s controversial exit from Chelsea on New Year’s Day, months before he took the City job in June. Now he wants the player he trusts to anchor his most important department.

City have already spent big to reshape that area of the pitch, paying £116m to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier in the summer. Landing Fernández would take that overhaul to another level – and push City into unprecedented financial territory.

No wonder City have turned aggressive. They need a statement signing to steady the structure and to send a message, both inside the dressing room and across Europe, that their grip on power will not loosen easily.

Fractures at Chelsea

On the other side of the deal sits a club wrestling with its own tension.

Relations between Fernández and Chelsea deteriorated after their Champions League exit to PSG in March. The midfielder did not hide his frustration, voicing it publicly as the season unravelled. For a player Chelsea paid £107m to sign from Benfica in 2023, that discontent carried weight.

He and his agent, Javier Pastore, even explored a potential move to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants quickly distanced themselves from the speculation in public, but the episode underlined Fernández’s willingness to look beyond Stamford Bridge.

New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso stepped into the situation in July, holding private talks with the midfielder. Alonso has refused to reveal what was discussed, leaving only the outcome visible: Fernández remains at the club, but his future is anything but settled.

High stakes on both sides

If City formalise their interest in time, Chelsea will face their biggest transfer decision since Eden Hazard left for Madrid in 2019. Letting Fernández go would mark the club’s most high-profile exit of the post-Hazard era and reshape Alonso’s first season before it has truly begun.
