Manchester City Eye Enzo Fernandez as Transfer Deadline Approaches

Manchester City are weighing up a late move for Enzo Fernandez as the transfer window ticks towards its deadline, with Enzo Maresca pushing hard for the Chelsea midfielder to become the centrepiece of his rebuilt engine room.

Fernandez has long been identified as a leading target for the new City boss after the departure of Rodri left a gaping hole at the base of midfield. City have already moved once in that area, bringing in 18-year-old Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi, who caught the eye at the World Cup. That signing, though, is viewed as the start of a reshaping, not the end of it.

City’s recruitment team are exploring multiple options. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Roma’s Manu Kone are both on their list as they look to refresh a midfield that has lost its anchor. But the focus, and Maresca’s preference, remains clear: Fernandez.

The chase comes against a complicated backdrop. Chelsea set out their stall earlier this month, imposing a firm-sounding deadline: clubs had until a Friday 5pm cut-off, almost two weeks ago, to submit offers worth up to £120m. That was the asking price for Fernandez.

City simply let that deadline pass.

Yet the story didn’t close. The stance from Stamford Bridge has started to look less rigid than advertised. When Sky Sports News spoke to Xabi Alonso last week, the Chelsea head coach refused to offer any guarantees over Fernandez’s future. No bold declarations. Just a line about the midfielder working hard ahead of the Monday Night Football clash with Fulham.

Then came the team sheet at Craven Cottage. Injuries had already disrupted Alonso’s first game in charge, with Moises Caicedo among those unavailable. On paper, it felt the perfect moment to lean on Fernandez from the start, to build around a World Cup winner in a patched-up midfield.

Instead, Alonso went another way. Reece James stepped inside to partner Romeo Lavia in central midfield, while Fernandez began on the bench.

When he did come on, the reaction told its own story. Fulham supporters booed him onto the pitch. Chelsea fans responded with loud backing, a far warmer reception than the mixed mood that greeted his introduction against Real Sociedad in Chelsea’s final pre-season friendly at Stamford Bridge around 10 days earlier.

All of that feeds into a transfer narrative already laced with tension. Relations between Chelsea and Manchester City are strained. Chelsea’s season was badly destabilised around Christmas when Maresca left the club, a departure that forced City to pay £17m in compensation for their role in taking him.

That episode still lingers. Any negotiation over Fernandez will have to cut through that backdrop of resentment and hard bargaining. Chelsea had previously flagged the £120m figure. Whether they hold that line with City, or adjust it in the final days of the window, remains to be seen.

What is clear is that City are armed and ready. They have generated significant funds by selling a record number of players in this window and are under no pressure to cut corners financially. Maresca, for his part, is understood to be a huge admirer of Fernandez and sees him as the ideal conductor for his style of play.

So the question hangs over the final stretch of the window: how far are Manchester City willing to go, and how much pain are Chelsea prepared to endure, to decide where Enzo Fernandez plays his football this season?
