Manchester City Pursue Enzo Fernandez as Chelsea Holds Firm

Manchester City have opened talks with Chelsea over a blockbuster move for Enzo Fernandez, with Enzo Maresca driving an ambitious bid to reshape his midfield around the Argentina World Cup winner.

The missed deadline has not killed the deal. Inside the Etihad, there is a belief Chelsea will still sell before the end of the window. At Stamford Bridge, the message is different in tone but not in outcome: they will sanction an exit if their valuation is met and if they can bring in a replacement.

Only now, that valuation may have shifted. Chelsea are expected to ask for either more than £120m or a more favourable payment structure than the one discussed before August 14. The pressure of the market, and City’s need for a high-end midfielder after Rodri’s departure, gives them leverage.

Record-breaking territory

If City agree to Chelsea’s demands, the deal will land in historic territory. Fernandez is already one of the most expensive players in Premier League history. Any fee that climbs beyond the £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer would make the 25-year-old the most expensive sale in English football.

City know the numbers. They also know what they’re buying: a midfielder who can operate as a deep-lying controller, a box-to-box eight or even as a ten, as Maresca occasionally used him at Chelsea. That tactical versatility is a key part of why the new City manager is pushing so hard.

A divided Stamford Bridge

On the pitch, Fernandez remains involved. He came off the bench in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday, a cameo that played out against a soundtrack of mixed emotions in the away end.

Sections of the Chelsea support booed him; others immediately responded by chanting his name. The reasons are tangled. Some frustration stems from his desire to leave. Some may still be rooted in Argentina’s role in knocking England out of the 2026 World Cup. Whatever the motivation, the atmosphere around him is no longer simple.

That tension only adds to the sense that a clean break may suit all parties.

Chelsea’s next move in midfield

Chelsea are already exploring how to reshape their midfield if Fernandez goes. Alex Scott is a player they admire, but Bournemouth expect him to stay. Chelsea saw a £64m bid rejected earlier in the summer and have not returned with an improved offer. There has been no fresh contact between the clubs.

The London side may not even chase a like-for-like replacement. When Fernandez arrived from Benfica, he was used in Portugal as a disciplined six. Under Maresca, he shifted higher, often as an eight and occasionally as a ten. That evolution opens up different options for Chelsea’s recruitment team.

They could instead target a more creative, attack-minded midfielder who can operate centrally or from the right. That plan links into another possible exit.

Neto, numbers and a changing attack

If Pedro Neto leaves, Chelsea’s thinking in the market could change again. The club are prepared to listen to offers close to £100m for the forward, although there is no guarantee he will go.

Should Neto depart, Chelsea may feel empowered to bring in a central or right-sided attacking midfielder or forward, using the combined flexibility of the Fernandez and Neto situations to remodel the squad in one hit.

For now, though, the spotlight sits firmly on Enzo Fernandez. City are pushing. Chelsea are holding their line. The fee is climbing towards record territory.
