Manchester City to Bid for Enzo Fernandez Amid Chelsea Standoff

Manchester City are ready to test Chelsea’s resolve with an opening offer for Enzo Fernandez, as Enzo Maresca pushes hard to reshape his midfield before the window shuts next week.

The Argentina international has been placed at the top of Maresca’s wish list after a summer of upheaval at the Etihad. Four major midfielders have gone, and City’s manager wants Fernandez as the centrepiece of his rebuild.

Chelsea know exactly how serious the interest is. Earlier in the summer, they set an informal cut-off point for any deal and made it clear they wanted at least £120m. That deadline came and went without agreement, but City have not walked away. The expectation inside the market is that they will come back with a fresh attempt in the final days of the window.

If a deal is struck, Fernandez would sit among the most expensive signings in Premier League history, behind only Liverpool’s £125m move for Alexander Isak last summer. It could also mark the second time in a single window that City break their own transfer record, having already paid £116m to bring Elliot Anderson in from Nottingham Forest.

The need for reinforcements is obvious. Tijjani Reijnders has left for Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia in a £52m move, Barcelona have taken Rodri for £65m, Newcastle have agreed a £52m fee for Nico Gonzalez and Bernardo Silva departed earlier in the summer before joining Real Madrid. That core, which underpinned City’s recent dominance, has been stripped out in a matter of weeks.

Maresca sees Fernandez as a ready-made anchor for the next version of City. The pair already share a strong relationship from their brief time together at Chelsea, a spell that ended abruptly and controversially when Maresca left Stamford Bridge on New Year’s Day before taking the City job in June. That personal connection could prove crucial as negotiations reach a critical stage.

For Fernandez, the move talk comes at the end of a turbulent stretch in west London. Alongside his agent, former Paris St-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore, he explored interest from Real Madrid earlier this year, only for the Spanish club to issue a public statement denying any attempt to sign him. The uncertainty has lingered ever since Chelsea’s Champions League exit to PSG in March, a defeat after which Fernandez grew increasingly critical of the club’s direction.

New manager Xabi Alonso tried to steady the waters in July. He confirmed he had held a private conversation with Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for £107m, but refused to reveal what was said. The message was simple: keep the details in-house, keep the player on board. The tension never fully eased.

It surfaced again on Monday night. Fernandez came off the bench in the second half of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham at Stamford Bridge and was met with boos from sections of the home support, still angered by his role in England’s World Cup exit. At full-time he briefly joined his team-mates and the away fans in celebration, then headed straight down the tunnel, the first Chelsea player to disappear from the pitch.

Now the clock is ticking. City need a statement signing in midfield. Chelsea face a decision on whether to cash in on one of their most valuable assets or ride out the storm with a restless star on their hands. One way or another, the Enzo Fernandez story is about to reach its next chapter.
