Mahama Warns Against Ghana’s Talent Drain in Football

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has raised a sharp warning over the steady exodus of the country’s best young footballers, arguing it is slowly stripping quality from the domestic game.

Speaking at Jubilee House on September 8, 2026, during a meeting with Nations FC, Medeama SC and Ampem Dakoa Ladies, Mahama stressed that the national league is paying the price every time a rising star is whisked away at the first sign of promise.

“We lose them too early”

Mahama pointed to a familiar pattern. A youngster breaks through, strings together a few standout performances, and almost immediately lands on the radar of scouts. Before local fans can truly embrace him, he’s gone.

In his view, that cycle is dragging down the standard of Ghana’s domestic championship. The president underlined that the country is losing too many players at the development stage, before they can properly mature in the Ghanaian league.

He called for deliberate efforts to keep emerging talents at home longer, arguing that retaining them through key years of their growth would strengthen clubs, sharpen competition and give local supporters a higher level of football to watch week after week.

National team as a proving ground

Mahama did not just diagnose the problem; he floated a pathway. He suggested that promising players should be given a chance to taste international football with the national team while still based in the local league.

That exposure, he believes, would arm them with vital experience against international opposition, toughen their mentality and refine their game. Only after that stage, he argued, should they become prime targets for international or even local scouts looking to move them abroad.

In Mahama’s view, a more mature, battle-tested Ghanaian footballer leaving the league is not a loss but a success story. The concern lies with those who depart before they have truly grown, leaving the domestic game a little thinner each time.
