Lucas Herrington's Record Transfer to Hull City

Colorado Rapids have completed a landmark deal, sending teenage defender Lucas Herrington to newly-promoted Premier League side Hull City in a transfer that rewrites the MLS record books.

The 18-year-old Australian leaves for what is reportedly a fee rising to $23 million – $17 million guaranteed – plus a sell-on clause, making it the largest outbound transfer for a defender in league history and a club-record sale for Colorado.

From bargain buy to record sale

Herrington’s rise in Denver has been rapid and ruthless.

Colorado picked him up from A-League side Brisbane Roar FC on a pre-contract in August 2025, reportedly for under $1 million. Less than a year later, he’s walking out the door as one of the most expensive defenders MLS has ever produced.

On the pitch, he justified every bit of the hype. The center back earned a 2026 MLS All-Star nod, broke into the Socceroos setup, and featured in two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Back with the Rapids this season, he logged 20 league appearances, chipping in 1 goal and 1 assist while anchoring the back line.

A kid from Brisbane, a dream in Colorado

Herrington arrived in Colorado as a teenager leaving home for the first time, and he made sure to underline what that meant.

“When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream. The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one,” he said.

“I’m grateful to my family, my teammates and coach Matt Wells, and Padraig Smith for believing in me, supporting my growth and giving me the opportunity to take the next steps in my career. To the fans: thank you for embracing a kid from Brisbane as one of your own. Colorado has given me so much, and I’ll always be proud to have been a Rapid. His words land at a delicate moment for the club.

Colorado are in their first season under head coach Matt Wells, the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant tasked with dragging the Rapids back into contention. Right now, they sit 11th in the Western Conference, two points off the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line on 22 points.

Hull’s Premier League return, Herrington’s next stage

For Hull City, this is a statement move on their return to the Premier League.

Back in the top flight for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign, the Tigers clinched promotion by beating Middlesbrough in the 2025-26 EFL Championship playoff final. They now turn to an 18-year-old World Cup defender from MLS to help them stay there.

The fee, the profile, the timing – it all underlines how far Herrington’s reputation has surged in under a year.
