Lucas Herrington Shines in Premier League Debut for Hull City

Lucas Herrington’s Premier League debut lasted barely half an hour, but it landed like a statement.

The 18-year-old defender came off the bench to help newly promoted Hull City close out a stunning 2-0 win over Manchester United, a result that shook up the opening weekend and lit up Australian football’s latest export.

What comes next

The night did carry a cost. Boss Sergej Jakirovic confirmed that Ajayi, Mendy and captain Lewie Coyle all need to be assessed for injuries in the next 24 hours. If any or all are sidelined, Herrington’s role could grow very quickly.

He is already in line to feature again in Tuesday’s League Cup tie away to Championship side Stoke City. Beyond that looms a significant early-season marker: a league trip to fellow promoted club Coventry City, who were beaten 3-0 by champions Arsenal on Friday.

For Hull, belief has arrived early. For Herrington, the Premier League door is now wide open.

For Carrick and United, though, this was a grim opening chapter: a first-ever Premier League defeat to Hull and a performance that exposed familiar problems. The questions will come thick and fast.
