Lucas Bergvall Commits to Tottenham with New Contract

Lucas Bergvall has ended the speculation and nailed his colours to the Tottenham mast, signing a new contract that ties his future to the club.

The 20-year-old midfielder, already a mainstay under Roberto De Zerbi, has racked up 80 appearances in all competitions for Spurs and arrives back from a World Cup summer with 14 senior caps for Sweden to his name.

Nottingham Forest and Newcastle circled hard in the recent window, sensing an opportunity to prise him away. Instead, Bergvall chose continuity over a fresh start, committing to a project he clearly believes is gathering serious momentum in north London.

“I think we’re building something great here,” he said after putting pen to paper. “It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

For De Zerbi, the extension locks in one of the key pieces of his evolving side. The Spurs head coach has leaned heavily on Bergvall’s energy and ambition, and he made no attempt to hide his admiration.

“Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” De Zerbi said. “Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments.

“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

Tottenham have kept one of their most coveted young assets. Now the question is how high Bergvall can climb in a team that expects his trajectory to match its own.
