Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract with Tottenham

Lucas Bergvall has performed a sharp U-turn at Tottenham, signing a new contract just three months after telling the club he wanted out.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder had pushed for a summer move, frustrated by limited minutes following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival late last season. The change in coach coincided with a turbulent run-in, Spurs only just avoiding relegation, and Bergvall’s role shrank at precisely the moment he wanted to grow.

Clubs circled. Nottingham Forest tested Tottenham’s resolve with a £38m bid, which Spurs rejected. Aston Villa and Chelsea also showed interest, sensing an opportunity around a player widely regarded as one of Europe’s most gifted young midfielders.

Game time has not exactly flowed since. Bergvall has managed just 45 minutes of Premier League football so far this season. Yet instead of forcing an exit, he has now committed his future to the club.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” he said after signing.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

De Zerbi has never hidden his admiration for Bergvall’s talent. In July, at the height of the uncertainty, he described the midfielder as “a top, top, top player” but insisted he would not beg anyone to stay.

He also held his hands up over last season’s chaos, admitting he made mistakes in how he handled Bergvall during the fraught run-in that left Spurs clinging to their top-flight status.

Now, with the contract saga resolved, De Zerbi has his midfielder back onside and a clear path to rebuild that relationship.

“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential,” the Italian said.

For Tottenham, who stared down serious Premier League interest and kept their man, the question shifts from whether Bergvall would stay to how quickly he can become central to the project De Zerbi insists is “building something great.”
